Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

Celebrating Our Values Through Student Voice

At Kapinara Primary School, our values of Kindness, Consideration, and Service for Others are at the heart of everything we do. They guide the way we learn, play, and grow together as a community.

As part of our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach, we have been working on a special project to bring our values to life in a visible and lasting way- through recognition badges. These badges can be proudly sewn onto school uniforms, giving students a tangible reminder of the values we live every day as a school community.

Student Voice Leads the Way
The design journey for our recognition badges began with the inaugural Principal’s Art Award, where the theme was “We Are Kapinara.” Students used bold colours, powerful symbols, and imagery that reflected our school’s identity and connection to the ocean.

Building on this success, the second Principal’s Art Award focused on “Kapinara Values.” Students were challenged to represent kindness, consideration, and service for others through their artwork. The entries were filled with creativity and imagination, and a strong theme emerged- the ocean, hearts, and hands.

Given our school’s coastal location, many students naturally connected our values with sea creatures and marine life. This connection felt authentic and uniquely Kapinara.

The Badge Concepts

1. Symbol-Based Designs:

  • Kindness – A heart
  • Consideration – Hands holding a heart
  • Service – A medallion

2. Ocean-Inspired Designs:

  • Kindness – A heart with a stingray
  • Consideration – An octopus with hearts
  • Service – A starfish medal

Why Recognition Badges?

The PBS framework encourages schools to acknowledge and reinforce positive behaviours that demonstrate their values. Our Kapinara recognition badges will:

  • Provide a visible way for students to show their commitment to living our values
  • Strengthen our culture of kindness, consideration, and service
  • Build pride in belonging to Kapinara Primary School
  • Become a long-term keepsake, as they can be sewn directly onto uniforms

Have Your Say!

Now, it’s time for our community voice. We’d love to hear from students, parents and community members as we decide which design set will move forward.

We’d love your input as we decide on the final designs for our recognition badges. Please take a moment to complete the short survey: https://forms.office.com/r/NnF3fasqFQ

Your voice will help us celebrate our values of Kindness, Consideration, and Service for Others in a way that truly reflects our Kapinara community.

School Board Membership- Expression of Interest

At Kapinara Primary School, our School Board plays a vital role in supporting good school governance. The Board ensures school resources are used effectively, community expectations are reflected, and our school’s priorities remain focused on the needs of our students.

We currently have one vacancy for a parent representative on the School Board and invite expressions of interest from parents and carers who would like to contribute to our school in this way.

About the School Board
The School Board is made up of parents and staff who work together to:

  • Help set the school’s strategic direction and monitor progress towards priorities
  • Contribute community perspectives to school decision-making
  • Approve contributions, charges, booklists and dress codes
  • Strengthen links between the school and community

The Board meets termly on Tuesday of Week 4, 5:30–7:00pm. Training will be provided for new members, usually in an evening session with other new board members from local schools. No prior experience is required.

Nomination and Voting Process
To nominate, please email a headshot and a 150 word candidate statement outlining:

  • Your connection to Kapinara Primary School
  • Why you are nominating for the School Board
  • The skills, experiences, or perspectives you would bring to the role

Please submit it by 3.00pm on Thursday 18 September 2025 to Natalie.Oddy@education.wa.edu.au

If multiple nominations are received, a voting process will be held, and candidate profiles will be shared with the school community. The successful candidate will be announced following the completion of the required screening process.

Find Out More
If you would like further information about the role, please contact myself or our School Board Chair, Gavin Bennett. The School Board Terms of Reference are also available on our school website School Board – Kapinara Primary School.
This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the future of our school, and we warmly encourage interested parents to consider nominating.

Staffing Update

Celebrating Anna Trovarelli
Anna Trovarelli began as Kapinara’s Art Teacher in 2013, since then she has nurtured creativity across our school- curating Kapinara Under the Stars, leading whole-school projects like the Rainbow Letterbox Mosaic, and transforming our learning spaces into vibrant galleries. On behalf of our students, staff, and community, thank you, Anna, for building a joyful, high-quality arts program at Kapinara. We wish you every happiness in this next chapter.

As part of Anna’s transition to retirement, she has now concluded her teaching at Kapinara. Her classes are being covered by:

Pyjama Dress Up Day Reminder

Tomorrow Friday, 5 September, our amazing Year 6 students have organised a Pyjama Dress-Up Day to help raise funds for The Pyjama Foundation – a great cause. Come to school in your comfiest pyjamas and don’t forget to bring a gold coin donation to show your support.

The Pyjama Foundation was created to provide children in care with a world full of unlimited opportunity, to create positive relationships, and instil a love of learning.

Community Coffee & Catch-Up with the Principal

We invite all parents and caregivers to join us for our Community Coffee & Catch-Up with the Principal—a relaxed and informal opportunity to connect with our Principal, Mrs Natalie Oddy, and engage in open conversation about school life.

These sessions are usually held twice per term (Weeks 3 and 7), offering regular opportunities for families to engage with school leadership in a welcoming environment.

Next Event (Term 3 Only): Week 8
Time: 8:45 AM – 9:30 AM
Location: Kapinara Primary School Staffroom

Please RSVP to assist with catering. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sustainability

On behalf of the Sustainability Team, we’re excited to announce a fantastic new project: a full plan for our new school veggie patch! Inspired by Albert Einstein’s famous words, “Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought,” we’ve gone beyond the usual gardening tips and have really thought about what nobody else has. It turns out, even vegetables have their own quirky family dramas and specific needs, and we’re proud to have become their biographers.

This project is a great mix of science and hands-on work. We’ve carefully researched every detail, from figuring out a budget and a timeline to the specific needs of various plants. We’ve even looked into the family backgrounds of our future crops, discovering that our tomatoes and potatoes are from the rather intense Solanaceae (nightshade) family, while our cucumbers and zucchini are from the more relaxed Cucurbitaceae (gourd) family.

We’re really proud of all the hard work that has gone into this. We can’t wait to share our findings and begin the planting phase, where all of our diligent planning will finally come to life.

Compass is coming

As part of the Department of Education’s Program Kaartdijin, Kapinara Primary School is transitioning to a new online school management system called Compass. This integrated, cloud-based platform will streamline many of our existing processes, including attendance, reporting, and communication.

Compass will be used across all Department schools, providing families with a consistent and efficient way to stay connected with their child’s education.

This term we had a class trial of Compass to explore its features and functionality in a real classroom setting. From this we are confident in moving forward with a full school rollout. Please note you will receive your log-in temporary password and details on Monday 8 September. From this date, all absences can be submitted via the App.

We thank the community for the positive feedback so far and for the conversations regarding any challenges that the new platform is highlighting. We are addressing any issues highlighted as we would love it to be the one stop app for communication and information. Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve the process.

Accessing Compass

To prepare for this transition, we kindly ask all families to:

The Compass Parent Portal gives families access to real-time updates and important school information. Within the portal, you will be able to:

  • Add attendance notes for your child
  • Communicate with teachers
  • Provide consent for school events
  • View school news items and announcements

Celebrating Sport at Kapinara

We’re excited to celebrate the recent achievements of Michael E, who competed over the weekend at the 2025 SWA Junior SC Championships.

Michael had an outstanding meet, earning a State Silver Medal in the 50m Freestyle with a personal best time of 29.66 seconds. He also shaved another 0.1 second off his time in the UWSC Team Relays, and claimed three Bronze Medals in the 100m Individual Medley, 100m Breaststroke, and 200m Breaststroke. What an incredible effort.

Following our own Faction Carnival, Michael’s performance is a great reminder of the joy, determination, and personal growth that sport can bring. Whether in the pool, on the track, or in the field, we hope all Kapinara students feel proud of their efforts and continue to find inspiration in each other’s successes.

Congratulations Michael on your achievement.

Chaplain’s Chat

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you and your family are well as we finally leave Winter behind.

In my role I have facilitated the Buz wellbeing programs in several classes, both in lower and upper primary. These programs give students the language and ideas to strengthen skills in communication, dealing with emotions, and building strong positive friendships. Staff can use these concepts to help guide students should a student want help to deal with a challenging situation at school. I look forward to running the program across more classes this year.

As well, on Tuesdays, lunch club remains popular. Along with the collection of games and activities, I have been introducing different group challenges for students to enjoy each week. On Wednesday lunches, I take out the gym mats for gym fun in the UCA.

I am available to parents to discuss supporting your child’s wellbeing. If you would like to be in touch, please discuss my involvement with their classroom teacher or leave a message with the front office. If you would like to review details of my role they can be found towards the bottom of an earlier newsletter here.

Kind regards,
Paul Stokes
Chaplain

Basil Zempilas MLA Visit

We recently welcomed Basil Zempilas to Kapinara for a visit. Mr Zempilas met with our Principal, had a look around the school and dropped in on our 6P classroom. We thank him for his support and look forward to future visits.

Scholastic BookClub

Scholastic Book Club has returned to Kapinara! Your child should have recently received their copy of the Book Club catalogue home in their schoolbag. It’s packed with hundreds of popular, age-appropriate books from just $3 to help you on your child’s reading journey. As an initiative to develop students’ interest and passion for reading, we encourage you to read through the catalogue with your child/ren.

Orders for this issue are due by midday this Monday 8 September. Parents can place orders for ISSUE 6 via LOOP app or scholastic.com.au/LOOP
Orders will be delivered to the school by end of term.

Book Club will run once a term in Terms 1, 2 and 3, in the lead up to our much-loved Book Fair which will continue again in Term 4.

Every purchase you make on Book Club earns our school 15% of the order value in Scholastic Rewards. We use these to purchase more books and educational resources for the school. It all helps!

Parents can order direct via the Scholastic website, with order details provided in the Book Club catalogue.

Mobile Phone Reminder

Help us keep Kapinara a safe and focused place for learning!

The Department of Education guidelines mean students are not permitted to use mobile phones at school, unless for medical reasons or a teacher-directed learning activity. If a phone is required for health reasons, this must be included in a school-approved health care plan.

We understand that some families choose to provide a phone or smart watch for safety or emergency purposes. If so, phones should be handed to the teacher at the start of the day for safe keeping and remain switched off during school hours. Smart watches should be set to aeroplane/school mode so calls and messages cannot be sent or received.

As we have a duty of care for all students while at school, any communication during the day should come through the school office.

Members of our school and broader community have been talking about the Wait Mate initiative—we’d love to hear your thoughts  (Home | Wait Mate).

Thank you for your ongoing support.

2026 Planning

Term Three is when we start our planning for the following year. It would help us greatly if you could contact us if you know your child will not be returning to Kapinara in 2026. While it seems fairly early, it is important information for our planning, particularly in terms of budgeting, and structuring classes. We appreciate your understanding and help in moving smoothly into next year!
