Principals Message
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you and your family enjoyed a restful break and are ready for another busy, engaging term of learning at Kapinara. It has been lovely to see the students return with big smiles, ready to reconnect with friends and continue their learning journey.
This semester, our staff are focused on engaging students within their writing program using Seven Steps for Writing Success. Already, I have had some wonderful Pre-Primary students visit my office, proudly using onomatopoeia as a way of creating a sizzling start to their stories. It’s exciting to see their confidence and creativity as writers growing so early in their learning journey.
We look forward to a term filled with learning, kindness and community connection.

Winter Derby Day!
This weekend is the AFL Derby Day and it will be the coldest day we have had this year!
So to celebrate winter and the derby, students are welcome to wear a beanie or scarf to school tomorrow, Friday 25 July. It may be any type of beanie or scarf, does not need to be footy themed.
Please note this is not a free dress day, no footy jumpers or footy socks, normal school uniform applies.

NAIDOC WEEK Wrap-Up
Kapinara PS concluded Term 2 with NAIDOC celebrations that had been explored throughout the term. Classes began work during Reconciliation Week and Miss Marsh’s Year One Assembly was a lovely conclusion to the themes explored. Most classes buddied up enabling young students to be guided by older peers to explore the NAIDOC theme of “Strength, Vision and Legacy” creatively. Here are some photos of the collective works of students

During NAIDOC WEEK at Kapinara, the Year 6 cohort reviewed past posters and slogans. They reflected on the change in artwork styles and messages since the poster competition was created in 1972. Students were asked to pick posters which caught their eye and discuss the art stye and the message within. These are some reflections from students in 6ZG.

2025 Soirée Wrap-Up
On the 1 July, our music students performed at Churchlands Concert Hall as part of our Kapinara Soiree. The Orchestra, Rockapella and instrumental ensembles shared amazing performances, followed by some brilliant Year 6 solo and group pieces. Our wonderful Music & Tech Captains ensured this night was a smooth success. Congratulations to everyone involved for your hard work, focus and professionalism.

Exciting Maths News at Kapinara!
We are thrilled to share that Kapinara Primary School has completed a successful trial of a whole-school mathematics initiative aimed at strengthening student understanding and confidence in maths. This term, our Year 2BT and Year 3HS classes have taken part in an exciting action research project using PRIME Mathematics, a highly regarded, research-based program developed in Singapore.
After careful consideration of a range of mathematics programs, our Mathematics Committee have selected PRIME to be the Mathematics programme that we will use moving forward due to its strong track record in building deep mathematical understanding through best-practice teaching strategies. The program aligns with our goal of delivering a viable and guaranteed curriculum- one that ensures consistency, rigour, and accessibility for all learners.
We value student voice as a key part of our decision-making. Students involved in the trial completed a survey in Week 2 and completed a follow-up survey in Week 10. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many students reporting increased enjoyment and confidence in maths. Teachers involved in the trial have also observed a noticeable improvement in students’ depth of understanding and engagement. Importantly, PRIME offers rich extension opportunities, which we will continue to prioritise.
We look forward to using PRIME mathematics in 2026 throughout the school. This will include some additional books being added to the booklist in order to ensure the success of the program throughout the school. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our Mathematics Curriculum Leader, Gemma Hopetoun-Smith, at Gemma.Hopetoun-Smith@education.wa.edu.au.
