Principal Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a positive and productive start to the 2026 school year at Kapinara Primary School. Classrooms have quickly settled into strong learning routines, and it has been wonderful to see students reconnecting with friends, welcoming new classmates, and embracing the opportunities of a new year with enthusiasm and confidence.

Our focus on high-quality teaching and learning continues, with staff working collaboratively to embed our whole-school approaches in Literacy and Numeracy. This year marks the full implementation of PR1ME Mathematics across the school following a successful trial in 2025, alongside our ongoing use of the Seven Steps for Writing Success. These approaches are designed to strengthen students’ foundational skills while promoting confidence, problem-solving, challenge and a love of learning.

Equally important is our commitment to student wellbeing. Our Positive Behaviour Support framework, grounded in our school values of Kindness, Consideration and Service for Others, continues to guide expectations across the school. Students are already demonstrating these values in the classroom, playground and wider community, and we thank families for reinforcing them at home.

Strong partnerships with families remain central to student success. Thank you to the many parents and carers who have attended information sessions, communicated with teachers, or supported school events so far this term. Your involvement makes a significant difference.

As we move further into the term, I encourage all students to continue striving for their personal best, academically, socially and emotionally. We look forward to a term filled with learning, growth and memorable experiences.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Kapinara Primary School.

Warm regards,

Natalie Oddy
Principal
Kapinara Primary School

Re: EARLY CLOSURE PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS (Year K-6)

As part of the Kapinara Primary School Communication Policy, we gained endorsement from the School Board and permission from the Department of Education to close the school for half a day for Parent/Teacher Interviews, so teachers can meet with families for 10 minutes for an update on their child’s progress.

The school will close at 12pm and students will be dismissed to go home.

Meetings can be scheduled for Week 8, Tuesday 24 March commencing at 12:30pm and concluding at 5:20pm.

Please ensure your child/children do not return to school to play unsupervised in the quadrangle or on the oval.  Should you need to access supervision for your child/ren, Their Care will open its bookings from 12.00 noon for out of school care. Bookings can be made via the following link TheirCare – Family Login , selection “Book Now” either register or login if you’re already a client of TheirCare.

The interview booking system is now open via Compass and will close Friday 20 March at 3pm.  This system allows families to easily view available times and book a meeting with their child’s teacher online.

To manage this time frame efficiently there are limited 10 minute time slots, which will be allocated on a first in basis. However, we are aware that some parents/carers will not be able to attend on this day due to various reasons. To accommodate parent availability please contact the class teacher/s by email to negotiate an alternate day/time, should you still require an interview if you have not secured a place.

While it is expected that anyone coming into to the school will sign in and sign out electronically at the office, on this occasion this is not practicable. You will be able to go to directly to your child’s classroom.

Parents are reminded that they are welcome to contact their child/ren’s teachers at any time throughout the year to request a meeting.

Please log in to the Compass app and follow the steps below to book an interview time with your child/ren.

Step 1 – Log in to Compass

Step 2 – Open the Conference Booking

Step 3 – Read the School Message

Step 4 – Select Your Child

Step 5 – Choose the Teacher

Step 6 – Choose a Time

Step 7 – Confirm Your Booking

If you experience any difficulties making a booking, please contact the school office or follow the attached “how to” below.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Year 6 students Parliament House excursion

Our excursion to Parliament House was a very interesting and insightful experience, where we gained a deeper understanding of Australia’s democratic system of government. The day started with a visit to the Constitutional Centre, housed in a beautiful, historic building, where we learned about the three levels of government.

The highlight of the excursion was our visit to Parliament House itself. We were fortunate enough to meet Basil Zempilas, the member for Churchlands, who shared insights into his role and discussed how we, as Year 6 students, can shape the future. After our conversation with such an important political figure, we toured the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council, and even took part in a role-play on making laws for Western Australia. Sitting in the Parliamentary Chamber was truly an honour.

Overall, our visit to Parliament House was not only educational but also highly engaging, making it a very memorable experience.

Year 6 Students Ern Halliday Day Camp

Challenge by Choice, Lead by Action, and Support with Encouragement. On Tuesday 3 March, our Year 6 students took on the challenges at Ern Halliday, demonstrating fantastic leadership, teamwork and resilience throughout the day. Students embraced the opportunity for hands-on experiences and outdoor challenges, stepping outside their comfort zones while encouraging and supporting one another. From caving adventures and flying fox rides to beach activities, the day was full of excitement, problem-solving and fun. It was wonderful to see so much laughter, collaboration and determination on display. By the end of the day, our students were certainly exhausted, but proud — proving once again that Kapinara kids can do it all!

Year 3 Students Herdsman Lake excursion

The Year 3s visited the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre last Wednesday, 25th February. We had a fabulous morning going on a bird watch over the very long and windy boardwalk. We saw many different types of birds, including a Tawny Frog Mouth, a pelican, an Australian Shell Duck and a White Faced Heron. We also had the opportunity to scoop up small microscopic creatures in our nets to then look at them under a microscope. We saw glass shrimp and tiny fish up close. Our third activity was sifting through dirt to find tiny crawly critters that live in the soil at Herdsman. We mainly found ants and tiny spiders. Before we left, we were allowed to go inside the discovery centre and look at the turtles, bob tail lizards and frogs in their tanks. We also got to go upstairs to the bird watch area and look out over the whole lake.

It was an awesome morning!

“What I did was see all of the birds from the high lookout window inside.” Frankie 2/3BT

“I liked the bob tail that lived in its enclosure.” Arthur 2/3BT

“I thought there was tadpoles in the water but they were actually tiny fish. They were so cute!” Isabel 2/3BT

Year 4 – 6 Faction Swimming Carnival

Our annual Swimming Carnival was a fantastic success, filled with enthusiasm, teamwork, and plenty of faction spirit! The day was packed with exciting races, impressive performances, and lots of cheering from the side-lines. It was wonderful to see so many students giving their best effort, supporting one another and demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship throughout the event. A special mention goes to Mia T in year 6 who smashed all the school records in all her respective events.

Winter faction won the carnival with an impressive 316 points, Strickland in 2nd place with 199 and Eliott finished 3rd with 141points.

A huge thank you must go to all our parents and carers who generously gave their time to assist on the day with timekeeping, starting and handing out ribbons. We truly appreciate your ongoing commitment to our school community.

We would also like to sincerely thank our dedicated staff and sports leaders who worked behind the scenes to organise the carnival. From coordinating events and preparing programs to ensuring everything ran according to schedule.

Congratulations to all students who participated and contributed to such a positive and energetic atmosphere. The Swimming Carnival was not only a celebration of athletic ability, but also of teamwork, resilience, and school spirit.

News & Updates

Grow Your Mind at Kapinara Primary School

At Kapinara Primary School, we are committed to supporting not only academic success, but also the wellbeing and emotional development of our students. In 2026, we are excited to continue strengthening our whole-school approach to wellbeing through the Grow Your Mind program.

Grow Your Mind is an evidence-informed wellbeing program designed to support students in developing emotional regulation, resilience, positive relationships and strong mental health habits. Through engaging lessons and a shared language across the school, students learn practical strategies to understand their emotions, manage challenges and build healthy “mental fitness” skills that support learning and life.

Want to know more?
We will be holding a Parent Information Session on Wednesday 11 March at 9.00am in the school Library. This session will provide families with further information about the program and how it supports students at school and at home. Please RSVP using this link .

Where Does Your Voluntary Contribution Go?

School Voluntary Contribution – $60 per student

Funds collected through Voluntary Contributions assist in purchasing valuable resources that support student learning, including literacy and numeracy resources, PE equipment, science resources and consumables, library books, and more.

P&C Voluntary Contribution – $200 per family

Our school is fortunate to offer outstanding resources that enrich every student’s learning experience, thanks to the generous support of our P&C community. Your contributions help ensure we can continue providing these exceptional opportunities.

In previous years, the P&C has funded projects such as shade sails for the lower primary playground and the big fan in the undercover area, directly enhancing the comfort and enjoyment of our students.

ICT Contribution – $50 per family

We are committed to enriching student learning through cutting-edge technology and engaging online programs. Your contributions help maintain access to these premium digital resources.

Thanks to ICT contributions, we are able to provide iPads to all our students without requiring a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program. This is a significant benefit for families, as the school covers the full cost of $66,000 per year to ensure every student has access to up-to-date technology. Your contributions play a crucial role in helping to partly fund this program and in supporting equitable access to technology for all students.

Chaplaincy Voluntary Contribution – $20 per family

Our Chaplain supports the school community two days a week. This contribution helps bridge the gap in federal funding, ensuring continued access to this valuable service for our students.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to finalise your contributions, we kindly encourage you to do so. Every contribution, regardless of size, directly benefits our students and strengthens our school community.
