Information for Parents and Carers of Students in Years 2, 3 and 4
RE Instrumental Music 2023
Please find in the following link, information about the Department of Education’s instrumental music program. It is important that parents read through this if they plan to submit an Expression of Interest for the program at Kapinara on behalf of their child.
In the next two weeks, I will be conducting the IMSS Music Aptitude Test with students in Years 2, 3 and 4. The Aptitude Test score will be the first point of entry in the selection process for students potentially being offered the opportunity to learn an instrument through the Department of Education’s music program.
Following this, to be accepted into an instrumental music program, students must satisfy the following criteria:
- willingness to participate in the instrumental music program
- enthusiasm and aptitude for music as demonstrated through participation in the classroom music program
- adequate parental support (parents are interviewed wherever possible)
- appropriate physical characteristics (for example, height for the double bass)
- ability to meet the requirements of the program (students come out of other classes for instrumental lessons and must be prepared to practise daily)
- if chosen, there is an expectation that students continue learning this instrument until at least the end of Year 6

The following instruments will be offered in 2023:
Year 3
4 places for violin (current Year 2s)
4 places for viola (current Year 2s)
Year 4
3 places for cello (current Year 3s)
Year 5
2 places for double bass (current Year 4s)
5 places for guitar (current Year 4s)
As you are aware, students from Pre-Primary to Year 4 had the opportunity to see and hear the String Orchestra and the Year 6 guitarists play at a mini-concert last Friday morning, They also had the opportunity to see and hear each of the instruments played separately.
If your child would like to be considered for the instrumental music program in 2023, please complete the electronic Expression of Interest using the following link. https://forms.office.com/r/qct4KuBfgi
Please note:
- To avoid conflicts in teaching methodology, students must not receive private lessons for the same instrument. Students can however, have private lessons for a different instrument.
- If accepted, students are not able to change to a different instrument in subsequent years. A child may opt to ‘wait’ in the hope of being offered a particular instrument at a future point in time and can complete the aptitude test again, but there is no guarantee that he/she will be selected in these future years.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Davey directly via sarina.davey@education.wa.edu.au.
Expressions of Interest must be received by Monday 19 September 2022.
