Message from the Principal

Dear Families

I am relieved to report that the number of students and staff within our school community isolating with COVID-19 has dropped significantly in the last week or two. In fact, according to our records there are only about half a dozen students out of 400 who currently have the virus. I sincerely hope that I haven’t spoken too soon. Please continue to advise us, through the website absentee notice or by emailing me, as you have done to date. It has been really helpful. Thank you also for your diligence in supporting all the health and safety measures we have put in place. Wouldn’t it be great if these hold us in good stead for COVID, cold and flu season?

P & C Donations

  • Last night our terrific P & C approved $1500 for the purchase of new ‘decodable’ reading books for students in junior and middle years. These books contain texts which can be ‘sounded out’ as children learn an increasing number of sound-symbol relationships. That is, as students move from blending single sounds to blending words that include what we call consonant digraphs (such as ‘sh’, ‘th’ and ‘ch’) and vowel digraphs (such as ‘ea’, ‘ay’ and ‘oi’) and on to trigraphs (such as ‘air’ and ‘igh’). These sound-symbol relationships are known as ‘phonics‘, sometimes referred to as ‘synthetic phonics’, and are essential for almost all children in learning to read.
  • At least the same amount was committed to the purchase of some more new sports equipment including volleyballs and t-ball and netball stands.

Fundraisers

  • The P & C has a fabulous fundraiser coming up next week – Kapinara families and friends are taking over Scitech on Friday 17 June! Scitech has been booked exclusively for our school community from 5:00 – 8:00pm. We are hoping that the 5:00pm starting time will enable our Kindy and Pre-Primary students to be part of the fun, even if they need to head home earlier than others; and that the 8:00pm end time will enable families with older children to come along after sporting practices. Being able to order pizza and drinks also helps. I hope to see you there.
  • Make sure you also mark the 9 September 2022 in your diaries for the annual parent event, which this year will be ‘Hollywood Bingo’. A special note for families who are new to Kapinara-each year the P & C aim to host a Quiz Night or Bingo Night – and tables book up very quickly!

NAIDOC Week is fast approaching

  • We have some special activities being organised for NAIDOC Week (Week 10). To help celebrate, the uniform shop has acquired some NAIDOC Week 2022 hair scrunchies and wristbands.
  • They are to be cash-only purchases ($3:00 each) and will be sold by Year 6 students before school.

Orchestra and Choir Students

The amazing volunteers in the uniform shop will be available in Week 10 to facilitate the fitting, and loan/purchase of ‘choir and orchestra’ uniform items. This is in preparation for Term 3 performances. You will hear more about this via P & C channels shortly.

Farewell

Sadly, at the end of this week, we farewell one of our two highly valued School Officers, Tehani Dellar-Pratt. Tehani, her husband and their two daughters are relocating to Canada – which is exciting for them, but sad for us. On behalf of our school community, particularly those of us who have been the happy beneficiaries of Tehani’s welcoming smile and/or cheerful voice on the end of the phone, THANK YOU. You go with our warmest wishes.

… and best wishes to you all.

National Reconciliation Week 27Th May to 3rd June  – Be Brave. Make Change.

To help us learn about and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the traditional custodians of Country, the P&C will be selling hair scrunchies and wrist bands – the various designs representing their connections to the  land, sea and community.
Purchases can be made at the uniform shop on Tuesdays and pop up stalls before school.
