Waste isn’t Waste until it’s Wasted

National Recycling Week, established by Planet Ark in 1996, is held every year during the second week of November (7th to 13th of November 2022).This year, National Recycling Week explores the idea that Waste isn’t Waste until it’s Wasted.  This year, it is all about quality over quantity, it is not about recycling more, but recycling better. Reducing our waste not only keeps valuable materials out of landfill it also benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Class 4BJ attended a presentation by Petta Baker, Waste Education Officer WA, who told us all about the correct way to sort your rubbish into the correct bin, green, yellow or red.

The students learned a lot of valuable information and produced some posters to help spread some important messages, such as all recycling must be loose, clean and empty, and that ewaste and hazardous waste should be dropped off at Town of Cambridge facilities.

Water wall

One of our most recent purchases was a fabulous ‘waterwall’ for Kindy and Pre-Primary students. Seeing children interacting with the waterwall, each other and the adults in Kindy is a perfect example of the way in which children’s play is children’s learning.

Irrespective of whether the learning is ‘informal’, for example during periods of free play or more focused and intentional via scaffolding providing by teachers (questioning and posing challenges), it looks like fun!

Year 6 Fair

The Year 6 students have been involved in a substantial, integrated body of work across several learning areas – Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS), Mathematics and Design and Technologies. This has involved the development of either a ‘good’ or service, a range of which will come together at the Year 6 Fair on Thursday 24 November. TheYear 6 students have put a lot of thought and effort into creating their good/service for the event, which is an important part of the Year 6 calendar. The fair is a highlight not only for our Year 6 students, but for the whole school. Children from Pre-Primary to Year 5 attend the fair, with younger students attending first with the support of teaching and support staff. A list of ingredients included in food, drink and activities (eg playdough) will be made available to families prior to the fair. All goods/services will cost no more than $3.00 each, and all funds raised go back to the school. It is suggested that individual students bring a maximum of $10.00 to spend on the day.

The goods and services on offer this year include:

  • Muffin Stall
  • Bowling
  • Basketball/Hoop Shooting Games
  • Cookie decorating
  • Spin the wheel game
  • Juice Stall
  • Lucky Dip
  • Plants for Sale
  • Hair Braiding and Face Painting

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Miss Lund, Mr Watson and Year 6 Students
