Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Carers

It was great to welcome everyone back yesterday morning. Thank you for your contribution to such a smooth and positive start to the school year! You will probably receive several lots of information, or requests for information, from us over the next couple of weeks. Thank you in advance for your attention to these.

Today, I’m delighted to introduce you to several new staff members.

  • Mrs Dixon is continuing in the Deputy Principal role as Mrs Knowles continues as Principal at East Victoria Park this term, and we are joined by a second Deputy Principal, Miss Bronwyn Carey.
  • Miss Carey joins us from an independent public school south of the river.
  • Mrs Emma Cory has joined Mrs Zaltsman in Year 4/5.
  • Mrs Jenny Carruthers is teaching Health and Physical Education alongside Ms Burrows.
  • Mr Patrick Stapleton has joined us as an Education Assistant (Special Needs)
  • Miss Sophie Derek-Fraser joins PP1 as an Education Assistant
  • Mrs Melissa Caley joins us one day a week as a school chaplain

School Chaplaincy services are designed to contribute to existing wellbeing and pastoral care services. within the school. While the term ‘chaplain’ suggests that the program might have a religious focus, or reference a specific faith, this is not the case. The program is about supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of students and families within our school community. Notwithstanding this, students’ engagement with a school chaplain is completely voluntary and parents may elect for their child to not be part of the chaplaincy program.

We are very grateful to the P & C for funding Kapinara’s access to the school chaplaincy program, as we were unable to access Australian Government funding for this year.  We will be sending you some further information about the school chaplaincy program in general and the ways in which it will support our students, staff and families.

Recess and lunch

This week we are trialling a slightly different structure for our school day. Until now, the morning session has run for 100mins (from 8:45 – 10:25am). However, we have decided to trial extending the morning session as many schools do, to create a two-hour block of learning. It facilitates a one-hour block of both literacy and numeracy, followed by a recess break, and then a third block of an hour prior to lunch. It also enables our specialist teachers to provide a continuous 60min specialist program, where previously this has involved 30 minutes before recess and 30 minutes after. While this means that the recess break is a little later in the morning, younger children will have the option of eating something earlier if they are hungry. We anticipate that older students will be less likely to need an interim snack, but some might, and we believe we can manage that. We’ve also considered interim toilet and handwashing breaks!

Throughout this week at least, the children in Years 1 and 2 are sitting in the shade under the beautiful large trees at the front of the school. We thought it would be nice to make use of this lovely space; to enable the Year 1s who have been used to eating in a smaller group, to adjust to lunchtimes with a lot more people; and to enable the Year 2s across three classes to maintain their friend connections from the previous year. Miss Carey and I have enjoyed chatting with them yesterday and today!

Class Meetings

When it looked as though border restrictions would be lifted on 5 February, we decided that we would arrange meetings with class teachers at the end of Week 1. Given that we don’t really know what this school year will look like, we decided to go ahead with them on Friday (4 February). I trust you received the advice re this in a couple of January emails. The times of individual class meetings will be available on our website by Wednesday morning.

As parents and carers, you will receive some information from your child’s teacher(s) and have an opportunity to ask questions. However, the main purpose of the meetings is to provide an opportunity for you to meet and establish a connection with teachers. Feedback from our community suggested that parents would feel more comfortable contacting their child’s teacher if they had met him/her face to face at the beginning of the year. If this is important to you, we hope you are able to come along. If you are unable to make it, you are invited to contact your child’s teacher(s) individually and/or arrange to meet at another time.

Out of School Hours Care

TheirCare, the new provider of out of school hours care, is delighted to confirm that Carina, Sam and Leah have remained at Kapinara. Joining TheirCare has meant that we have been able to maintain continuity for the Kapinara families using the service. We are grateful to have these positive, energetic and caring people as part of our community. State Manager Haydn Thompson has also been on site throughout the vacation break to make sure the new service got off to a flying start. OSHC team members, like all education workers irrespective of who employs them, must be double and subsequently triple vaccinated to work on our school site.

Finally, thanks to you all for wearing masks when you have been at school. Together we will continue to do everything we can to keep our community safe, healthy and happy.

PS This particular newsfeed will be sent to all ‘mail markers’ on this occasion to ensure it reaches everyone – apologies for Sunday’s which didn’t quite do that :-o

Best wishes
Elizabeth
