Principal Message

Kapinara Primary School continues to benefit from a highly engaged and supportive community, with families contributing in many ways to strengthen outcomes for our students. One important avenue for involvement is through our School Board, which plays a valuable role in supporting good governance, providing strategic input and ensuring community perspectives help shape the future direction of our school.

A Compass notification regarding School Board nominations was shared with families earlier this term. As nominations close next week, this serves as a final reminder for parents and carers interested in contributing to the ongoing success of Kapinara Primary School through School Board nomination. We are seeking to appoint three parent representatives to the School Board and have already received strong interest from our community. Thank you to those who have expressed interest in supporting our school through this important governance role. I encourage interested parents and carers to consider nominating and becoming part of this important work in supporting the ongoing success of Kapinara Primary School.

I would also like to acknowledge and sincerely thank our P&C Executive and members, whose ongoing commitment, advocacy and generosity continue to strengthen opportunities for our students and contribute positively to our school community. Through their volunteerism and support, our P&C consistently demonstrates one of Kapinara’s core values, Service for Others. The partnership between our School Board, P&C, school leadership and staff plays an important role in supporting Kapinara Primary School as we continue to move from strength to strength.

Vangelis Katsaitis, Director of Excellence Property Specialists, has generously sponsored a coffee truck where we warmly invite our valued volunteers and community members to enjoy a complimentary coffee prior to tomorrow’s assembly. This small gesture recognises the many ways volunteers contribute their time, energy and care to support our students and school community.

Thank you for your continued partnership, volunteerism and commitment to creating the very best opportunities for our students.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Year 4 HASS Incursion

Last week on the 6th, the Year 4 students were fortunate to participate in a rich and meaningful learning experience when Aunty Lois and Sue Jonklaas from Reconciliation WA visited Kapinara Primary School. During the engaging incursion, students explored the meaning and importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lore, developing an understanding of how Lore differs from Law and the vital role it plays in guiding relationships, responsibilities, culture and connection to Country.

Aunty Lois shared stories, perspectives and knowledge that provided students with a deeper understanding of First Nations cultures and ways of knowing. It was fantastic to see how engaged, respectful and thoughtful the students were throughout the session as they listened carefully and reflected on the important messages being shared. The incursion was a valuable opportunity for students to continue building their understanding of culture, community and respect.

School Sport WA Cross Country Success

Congratulations to Grayson for his outstanding performance at the 2026 School Sport WA Cross Country event. Competing in the 2.5km race for Year 5 boys, Grayson paced himself exceptionally well and secured an impressive 2nd place finish with a time of 8 minutes and 20 seconds.

A fantastic achievement that reflects his dedication, determination, and hard work. Grayson is already looking forward to competing again in 2027.

Well done, Grayson!

Kapinara School Values in Action

Blythe and Tom, our student councillors, proudly represented our school as ANZAC Day Service Ambassadors at the Cambridge ANZAC Day ceremony. They did an outstanding job, exemplifying our school values through their respectful conduct and acts of service.

PBS Update

We are excited to share that our very first Values Badges have now been awarded! Congratulations to the following students who have received a Consideration badge for consistently demonstrating our school values:

Oliver R
Brody R
Beau W
Olive H

What a fantastic achievement! We can’t wait to see how many more badges are earned before the end of term. Parents, please see an example below of where to sew these badges onto school shirts once they are earnt. Additional values badges can also be purchased via the front office once your child has received one.

A reminder to families that you can view your child’s Values Points at any time through the Compass app. This is a great way to celebrate the positive choices and behaviours students are demonstrating at school.

Staff have also been working hard to refine and explicitly teach expected behaviours and procedures across the school. Each week, a focus behaviour expectation, linked to our school values, is explicitly taught and reinforced across classrooms and shared spaces. It has been wonderful to see students demonstrating these values within the classroom, playground and wider community each day.

Over the coming weeks, a number of students will be randomly selected to participate in a short survey about how PBS is going at school and any suggestions they may have for improvement. We are looking forward to gaining this valuable student perspective to help strengthen engagement strategies and continue building a positive school culture for all students.

Student Art Showcasing Our Values

Violet from Year 3 has been busy creating a colourful masterpiece that showcases our school values through art. Inspired by our school colours and local surroundings, this vibrant artwork is now proudly displayed in Mrs Oddy’s office for everyone to enjoy.

Kapianra Makes a Splash to Win Interschool Swimming Carnival

Kapinara was incredibly proud of our swim team at the Interschool Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 29 April. Students showed fantastic sportsmanship throughout the day, cheering on their teammates, trying their best in every event, and representing our school with pride.

Their efforts paid off, with Kapinara winning the overall carnival and bringing home the 2026 winning shield!

Congratulations to all members of the swim team on a wonderful achievement. A special mention to Mia T (Year 6) and Grayson V (Year 5) for their outstanding performances on the day, with both students winning Champion Swimmer for their year group.

A big thank you also to Mrs Burrows for all her preparation and organisation leading up to the carnival. Your support and hard work helped make the day such a success.

Well done, Team Kapinara!

Science Week – Save the date

We are extending an invitation to parents/caregivers and community members to support Kapinara students and staff in celebrating National Science Week, from Monday 4 August to Friday 8 August. We invite parents who work in the field of science to share their expertise, enlighten students about their role in the community, and link the real-world application of science.

National Science Week aims to fascinate young people, instil a love of learning, and develop a curiosity that can foster a lifelong engagement with STEM and lead students to explore science as a career path into the future.

We will kick start Science Week with a fun sausage sizzle on Monday 4 August to introduce students to the week’s theme – SIZZLING SCIENCE. During the week, students will engage in some exciting and varied science activities.

If any parents or community members are willing to support this wonderful week by giving a presentation in their child’s classroom, or any classroom, please email me at wendy.tusak@education.wa.edu.au

If you are able to help with the sausage sizzle luncheon on Monday 4 August, Volunteer here

Do you own a Cricut machine?

We’d love your help putting one of our values logos onto vests for our students. – If you would like to help please email kapinara.ps@education.wa.edu.au

Music Shines at Kapinara

Thanks to a generous donation from Peter Flett last year, in honour of his late wife, Dr Penny Flett, we have also been able to place our second piano in the UCA, where students can enjoy playing music during recess and lunch breaks. Students are loving the opportunity to be creative, and to play and listen to music during their breaks.

Resilience and Wellbeing

Heading into Winter can be a challenging time for primary school children. The excitement of the new school year has settled, the weather changes, the days shorten, winter illnesses begin circulating, and many children experience dips in motivation, confidence, or emotional energy.

Bouncing back

Parents play a major role in helping children build resilience — not by removing difficulties, but by helping children develop the skills to manage them.  One key to building resilience is helping children understand that not every day will feel good – friendships change, mistakes are normal and learning can feel frustrating.

Rather than fixing problems, questions to help children bounce back include. “That sounds tough”, “What do you think you could try next?”, “Has something like this happened before?”, “What helped then?”. Questioning rather than offering solutions helps a child define where they are at and find their autonomy and own way forward.

Maturity

Throughout childhood, setting new challenges and supporting children to meet them are key to building their maturity. Some challenges you might consider include; children packing their own school bag, helping prepare lunches, managing their own homework schedules or taking ownership of increased household jobs. You might ask yourself, “What’s one thing my child can learn to manage independently this term?” Children gain confidence by being supported to build skills and competence in their goals.

Motivation

Children’s motivation for their daily routine or new expectations can be harnessed by collaborating with them when setting goals.  Having their buy-in and negotiation around the details can make family goals worthwhile. For example, what they get to put in their lunches, what free time looks like after completing homework, or a trade-off for doing extra jobs around the house.

Grow Your Mind

This month our focus is on the importance of friendships. Through the Grow Your Mind program we teach the students about respectful relationships and the importance of friendships. When children feel connected through friendship, their brains and hearts thrive. Positive relationships help build confidence, emotional wellbeing and a strong foundation for lifelong mental health

Not every person finds making friends easy but at Kapinara we teach a few golden rules to remember when making friends and what healthy friendships looks like.
