Principal Message
One of the great joys of leading Kapinara Primary School is seeing just how many opportunities our students are offered beyond their everyday classroom learning.
We trust you really enjoyed our Open Classrooms yesterday. It was wonderful to welcome so many families into the school and give our students the opportunity to proudly share their classrooms, learning and achievements. There was such a positive energy across the school, and these moments of connection between home and school are an important part of what makes Kapinara such a special community.
A quick look at our Term 3 Planner tells a wonderful story. Our calendar is full with events and experiences designed to enrich learning, build confidence, create connection and give our children opportunities to discover where their interests and strengths may lie.
Across the term, students are participating in Science Week, Book Week, assemblies, athletics, interschool debating competition, incursions and excursions, student leadership opportunities, the arts, music, cultural learning and community events, alongside the rich learning taking place in classrooms every day. There really is an extraordinary breadth of opportunity available to our students.

As we celebrate everything happening across our school, we are also looking ahead.
Our 2026 School Community Survey opens today, and I strongly encourage our families to take a few minutes to share their feedback. Hearing directly from our community is an important part of our ongoing school improvement and helps us understand what we are doing well, where we can continue to strengthen our work, and what our community values most about Kapinara.
The survey is open from Thursday 20 August until Thursday 3 September.
At Kapinara Primary School, we believe that strong partnerships between home and school are fundamental to achieving the very best outcomes for our students. The survey is anonymous, and I encourage all families to take a few minutes to participate. Learning Beyond the Classroom
Science Week a Great Success
Science Week was a fantastic success, providing students with opportunities to explore the wonders of science through engaging activities, presentations and hands-on learning experiences.
Throughout the week, students were inspired by a range of guest speakers, including Engineers, Biodiversity and Conservation Science researchers, Earth Science specialists, a Zoologist, Sports Science professionals and representatives from the Oil and Gas mining industry. Our guest speakers shared their knowledge, experiences and passion for science, helping students discover the many pathways and careers available in STEM.
Students also participated in engaging hands-on activities, including an experiment investigating gravity, force, friction and basic mechanical advantage. These experiences encouraged students to ask questions, test ideas and apply scientific concepts in practical ways.
We extend our sincere thanks to all of our guest speakers for generously sharing their time and expertise with our students. A special thank you also goes to Mrs Tusak for her organisation and dedication in bringing the week together, and to our wonderful Canteen team for preparing and serving the Science Week sausage sizzle for students to enjoy.
It was a wonderful celebration of curiosity, discovery and the important role science plays in understanding our world.
A Wonderful Musical Experience for Year 5
Our Year 5 students recently had the opportunity to attend Woodlands Primary School’s musical production at Churchlands Senior High School. Experiences like these provide valuable opportunities for students to appreciate the performing arts and be inspired by the talents of their peers. Thank you to Woodlands Primary School for sharing this fantastic production with our Year 5 students.
Gabrielle Bruce Artist in Residence Program
Our Year 3 and Year 4 students recently enjoyed a special art session with respected Wajarri Yamatji and Noongar contemporary artist, Gabrielle Bruce.
During the session, students were introduced to Gabrielle’s creative process and the stories, symbols and cultural connections that influence her artwork. Students then developed their own designs, inspired by their learning and collaboration with Gabrielle, which have now been incorporated into our new school signage
We can’t wait to see the students’ designs brought to life and incorporated into our school signage. Thankyou Gabrielle for sharing her knowledge, creativity and stories with our students. This experience has provided a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of culture, identity and storytelling through art.
Year 6 Students Celebrate a Fantastic Fair
Our Year 6 Fair was a fantastic celebration of student creativity, teamwork and initiative. Students worked hard to plan, prepare and run their own stalls, activities and games, creating an enjoyable experience for the whole school community.
It was wonderful to see our Year 6 students demonstrate confidence, collaboration and leadership as they brought their ideas to life and supported one another throughout the event.
We would like to thank our Year 6 students for their enthusiasm and dedication, along with our staff and families for their support in making the day such a success. The fair was a wonderful reflection of the creativity, skills and community spirit of our students.

During Health lessons with Mr Hodgson last week, the entire class earned a Values Point for the outstanding consideration they demonstrated. The whole class came prepared to learn, remained focused and on task, and followed instructions respectfully throughout the lesson.
What an amazing group of students who continue to represent our school values so well. We are incredibly proud of the positive example they set for others!

2027 Student Planning – Helping Us Plan Ahead
As we begin preparing for the 2027 school year, it is important that we have the most up-to-date enrolment information. If your child will not be returning to Kapinara Primary School next year (excluding current Year 6 students), we kindly ask that you let us know as soon as possible.
Early notification assists us with class organisation, staffing and resource planning, ensuring we are well prepared for the new school year.
Please email the school office at kapinara.ps@education.wa.edu.au with your child’s name and, if known, the name of the school they will be attending next year.
Open Classrooms
Thank you to all the families who joined us for our Open Classrooms Afternoon. It was wonderful to welcome parents and carers into our learning spaces to see firsthand the engaging activities and learning taking place across the school.
Students were proud to share their work, demonstrate their learning, and celebrate their achievements with their families. The afternoon provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen the connection between home and school while recognising the hard work and progress of our students.
Thank You to Our P&C
A big thank you to our wonderful P&C for their ongoing support and generous contributions to our school. Through P&C funding, we have been able to provide a new water cooler tap for Pre-Primary play area, new furniture for Kindy, and new sporting equipment for our students.
These resources make a real difference to our students’ learning, comfort and enjoyment at school. We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our P&C and the difference they make to our school community.
Canteen Open on Carnival Day!
Canteen will be available on School Carnival Day for recess and lunch. We are busy finalising the menu, which will include ‘Bundle Lunch Deals’ Main Meal plus popcorn and drink.
Parents, Carers and siblings are welcome to order too. Please create a new profile in QuickCliq, ensuring you include your child’s year group and teachers name so your food will be delivered together.

Supporting Student Wellbeing
Chaplain Chats
This year with Mrs Cheryl Walker, I have taken on the role of facilitating the Talkabout program. Talkabout is a structured social skills program designed to help primary school children develop confidence, communication skills and positive relationships. Presently we are continuing the program with groups of students established in previous years.
What is Talkabout
The program follows a gradual progression, beginning with self-awareness and self-esteem, helping children recognise their strengths, understand their feelings and develop confidence in who they are.
Children then develop social communication skills, including listening, taking turns, starting conversations, understanding social cues, expressing themselves and communicating their needs appropriately.
The program progresses to friendship skills, supporting children to understand what makes a good friend, cooperate with others, manage disagreements, solve problems, show empathy and build positive relationships.
Through discussion, modelling, activities and practice, children are given opportunities to develop and apply these skills in everyday situations. The overall aim is to help children feel more confident, connected and capable when interacting with others, while recognising and respecting that children may communicate and build relationships in different ways.
This program has been new to me this year. I have been impressed with the way it breaks down skills into activities, supporting students to master specific skills. Students have enjoyed the content and group work where they benefit from each other’s different perspectives and uniqueness.
This is one of the many programs that Kapinara PS draws on to support the wellbeing and holistic development of students. If you consider that your child may benefit from support with social skills please speak to your teacher about options for support.

This month we shine a spotlight on…Resilience
W E D O N ’ T build resilience by:
Denying our uncomfortable emotions
Not asking for help
Being positive all of the time
Through our Grow Your Mind program, we are explore how knowing and using our character strengths can help us build resilience.
Resilience is our ability to bounce back when things don’t go to plan. We all experience challenges, setbacks, mistakes and moments when we feel like giving up. By helping children recognise the character strengths they already have — such as courage, perseverance, kindness, gratitude, curiosity, creativity and humour — we give them tools they can draw upon during these tricky moments.
When children know their strengths, they can begin to think, “What strength could I use to help me through this?” Perhaps they need courage to try again, perseverance to keep going, or humour to help them see a difficult situation differently.
Use what we know about shark thoughts to make sure our thinking is in check. Use the good trusted people around us to help us. Look for glimmers around us that bring us joy.
Through Grow Your Mind, we are helping our students understand that resilience doesn’t mean never getting knocked down — it’s knowing the strengths within us that can help us get back up and keep going.
W E D O N ’ T build resilience by:
Denying our uncomfortable emotions. We must check in with ourselves and show curiosity with our feelings.
Not asking for help- we must use our trusted people to help us.

Year 6 Student Captains Update
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the many exciting events that took place during Term 2.
Throughout the term, students enjoyed the school disco, the Year 5 Brownes Dairy excursion, the Soirée, Year 6 Rotary speeches, Cross Country and Pyjama Day.
At the disco, students had a wonderful time at the Disney-themed dance party and wore some fantastic costumes. During the Brownes Dairy excursion, the Year 5 students learnt about how dairy products are made. At the Soirée, many students confidently performed an instrument, dance routine or song. The Rockapella students also gave an amazing performance.
Our Year 6 students showed great confidence when presenting their Rotary speeches, while every student demonstrated perseverance and determination during Cross Country. We finished the term with Pyjama Day, where everyone came dressed in their comfiest pyjamas.
Thank you to all parents and guardians for the support you provided throughout these events.
Looking ahead to Term 3, we have many more exciting events planned, including the Year 6 Fair, Book Week, Science Week and the Athletics Carnival. We would like to thank parents and guardians in advance for volunteering during Science Week, helping students prepare their Book Week costumes and supporting our school community in many other ways.

Hello Kapinara families!
Just over 2 weeks until our mid-year fundraiser!
We have kindly requested year groups to compile Live Auction items for Gatsby Glitz!
These are always a huge hit on the night – raising a massive amount of funds. Thank you for your generosity already received! This year, funds raised from this event will go towards a basketball court refurbishment! A space used by all students! (before, during and after school!) We can’t wait to feature the before and after photos!
There will be other fundraising games on the night such as : Daisy’s Lucky Draw (Raffle), Great Gatsby Mystery Cups (Everyone’s a winner), Blind Wine Bidding, Find Gatsby’s Emerald (Win a $250 voucher to BERT’S!) & more!
Not to mention the casino tables, grazing table, DJ & dancefloor. You have to be there to win BIG! Limited tickets ($60 pp) still available on QKR! (We are very close to selling out for a fully packed venue!).

Kapinara Primary School Playgroup
Term 3 at Kapinara Primary School Playgroup has been filled with cosy craft activities and fun filled outdoor play in the warm winter sun.
We’ve bedazzled our own sunglasses, made modelling clay masterpieces, played with water colour paints and conquered some super obstacle courses!
So come and join us! Bring your little ones along and get them ready for Kindy. Playgroup is the perfect way to develop social skills and language development, improve motor skills and encourage creativity and stimulate learning through play, all while building connections with our school community.
It’s a relaxed social outing for parents and carers too, so it’s a win win for all!
