Principal Message

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope everyone enjoyed a restful holiday and had the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. It has been wonderful to see our students return with smiling faces, renewed enthusiasm and a readiness to embrace another exciting term of learning.

Term 3 is always a vibrant and busy term, with many opportunities for our students to grow academically, creatively and socially. We look forward to celebrating student achievements and sharing the many wonderful learning experiences that take place across our school. This term we are especially looking forward to celebrating National Science Week. We are incredibly grateful to the many parent volunteers who will be joining us to share their knowledge, skills and passion for science through hands-on sessions with our students. Thank you in advance to everyone who has generously volunteered their time to help make this a memorable learning experience.

It would be my pleasure to invite you to Coffee with the Principal. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect, ask questions and enjoy a coffee together in a relaxed setting. I’d love to see you there RSVP.

Our new Kapinara supporter range is coming soon, and we can’t wait to share it with our community! The collection features a t-shirt, rugby top and cap, each incorporating our Kapinara values through unique designs created by our students as part of the Principal’s Art Awards. These special designs celebrate both our students’ creativity and the values that unite us as a school community. Keep an eye out for further information from our P&C Uniform Shop about the range and how you can purchase your supporter wear ready for upcoming school events and weekend sport. The range will be available by the end of August.

We also look forward to sharing the Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN results with families and celebrating the growth and achievements of our students. Year 3 and Year 5 families, please keep an eye out for your child’s NAPLAN results, which will be coming home in a sealed envelope with students today. Thank you for your continued support of our school. The strong partnership between our staff, students and families is what makes Kapinara such a special place to learn and grow. I look forward to another wonderful term working alongside you all.

Wishing everyone a fantastic Term 3.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Year 5 Brownes Dairy Excursion

Recently, our Year 5 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Brownes Dairy, where they followed the journey of milk from the farm to the supermarket. They learned how milk is collected, processed, packaged, and distributed, making valuable connections to their Science learning. One of the highlights of the day was watching the milking process and having the opportunity to milk a cow themselves. Students were fascinated to see where fresh milk comes from and gained a greater appreciation for the work involved in producing the dairy products we enjoy every day.

The excursion was a fun and engaging learning experience that gave students a better understanding of the dairy industry and how milk makes its way from the farm to our homes. A big thank you to the staff at Brownes Dairy for sharing their knowledge and to our teachers and parent helpers for making this memorable excursion possible.

Mrs Chipps Inspires Room 10 Caring for Our Native Wildlife

The End of term 2, Mrs Chipps spoke with Room 10 students about her rewarding role as a Native Wildlife volunteer. She shared fascinating stories about caring for injured native animals and explained the importance of protecting Australia’s unique wildlife. The students thoroughly enjoyed learning about her experiences and were inspired by the difference volunteers can make in their community.

Outstanding Success at the WA Schools Orienteering Championships

Late last term, Rosemary proudly represented Kapinara Primary School at the WA Schools Orienteering Championships and achieved an outstanding result, finishing in 1st place. Competing against students from across Western Australia, Rosemary demonstrated exceptional determination, focus, and navigation skills throughout the competition.

Congratulations, Rosemary, on this fantastic accomplishment.

Gabrielle Bruce Artist in Residence Program

We are excited to announce that our Year 3 and Year 4 students will be participating in an Artist in Residence Program with Gabrielle Bruce, a respected Wajarri Yamatji and Noongar contemporary artist on Wednesday 12th August.

Throughout the residency, students will work alongside Gabrielle, learning about her artistic practice and the rich cultural traditions and stories of Noongar Country through art. The program will provide students with a unique opportunity to explore creativity, culture, identity, and storytelling while learning from a professional artist.

As part of the project, students will create original designs inspired by their learning and collaboration with Gabrielle. These designs will be incorporated into our school’s signage, creating a lasting legacy that celebrates our students’ creativity and our school’s commitment to honouring Aboriginal culture and strengthening connections to Country.

We are delighted to welcome Gabrielle to our school and look forward to sharing the students’ creative journey and unveiling the completed signage with our school community.

Kapinara School Values in Action

Pyjama Day a Wonderful Success

Kapinara’s Pyjama Day was a fantastic success, with students embracing the opportunity to wear their favourite pyjamas, bring along their cuddly animal friends, and support a worthy cause. Students explored how milk and other dairy products are processed, packaged, and distributed, gaining valuable insight into food production,

Through the generous gold coin donations from our school community, we were proud to raise funds for the RSPCA, helping to support animals in need. In doing so, our students demonstrated Kapinara’s values of Leading Through Service and kindness for animals in our wider community.

News & Updates

Art Open Classroom – Celebrating Creativity Through Art

It was amazing to have so many families through the Art Room Open Afternoon on Thursday the 2nd of July. Term 2 was a culmination of all things Australian, ranging from Australian Artists, Australian Animals and Landscapes through to Aboriginal Inspired Artworks. We engaged with all aspects of Aboriginal Culture and were inspired to create images based on a variety of different Dreamtime Stories.

Thank you to all that came through the Art Room,  it was so wonderful for the students to receive such positive feedback about their creations. We have quite a few budding artists in our school community!

NAIDOC Celebrations

Last term we celebrated NAIDOC Week in the Art Room. To get things started, some classes watched a Yarning & Weaving Workshop with Cassie Fisher Patterson, an Aboriginal Artist. She dyed her own reeds and yarn to create traditional weaving. Inspired by this, TURTLE MANIA took over our school. The Year 2s to the Year 6s wove turtles from pop stick frames, and some very clever Year 5s and 6s wove tiny turtles from plain matchsticks!

Other classes made hand prints with dot paintings, listened to Dreamtime stories and created Rainbow Serpents and Snakes. We matched patterns from Aboriginal Art, learnt about Reconciliation, created whole class jigsaws and painted Dreamtime Sunsets, Lizards and Turtles.

It was wonderful to see students heavily engaged and sharing their creations.  These activities tied together our learning about Aboriginal Culture and Aboriginal People’s connection to the land.

Community Call-Out: Are There Any Architects in Our Community?

Do we have an architect, building designer, or draftsperson amongst our community members?

Our Administration Block is due for a redesign, and we are looking for someone who may be able to assist with developing concept plans and design ideas for the project. If you are interested in assisting or know someone within our community who has the relevant expertise, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact the Admin Team to discuss how you may be able to help.

Save the Date – Athletics Carnival 2 September

Supporting Student Wellbeing

Chaplain Chats

Dear parents and caregivers,

Anxiety is one of the common wellbeing areas primary aged children are learning to navigate. Coming back to school routines after a holiday break can sometimes be a trigger for heightened or returning anxiety. There are many strategies that can be tried, to find what works best for each individual. Some of these include steady breathing, doing something fun or thinking of fun things; exercising to burn off some energy; relaxing with pets; and listening to music or podcasts.

Below are some links to useful resources:

If you feel anxiety is impacting your child’s daily life – their wellbeing, friendships, school achievement or family relationships; please consider speaking to your GP. They can assess your child and talk to you about the types of support available. Also, speaking with your child’s teacher can assist them to best support your child at school.

Kind regards,

Grow Your Mind

July Focus: Reframing Our Thinking

Shark Thinking vs Dolphin Thinking

This month, we are focusing on growing our minds through optimism.

We encourage students to recognise their “shark thoughts” (negative or unhelpful thinking) and ask themselves:
“Is there a dolphin way to look at this problem?”

More often than not, there is a more positive and helpful way to view situations. Life is full of ups and downs, sometimes things feel fair, and sometimes they don’t. What matters is how we respond.

Students are learning to:

  • Notice their thoughts
  • Decide if they are helpful or unhelpful
  • Challenge and reframe those thoughts

Shark Thought Example:

“Oh no, I have to perform on stage. I hate performing. I will get so nervous and forget my place in the music.”

Ask: Is this thought helpful?

Dolphin Thought Example:

“It’s performance time! I’m not so excited about it, but the more I practise being on stage, the easier it will become.”

By practising dolphin thinking, students build resilience, confidence, and a positive mindset.

Quick steps to try it

  1. Notice your automatic thought
  2. Question it (“Is there another way to see this?”)
  3. Replace it with a more balanced or helpful view
