Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers
I hope you are well. Despite the adjustments to activities and schedules we continue to make, life at school remains interesting and varied. Last Tuesday we were able to proceed with our Faction Swimming Carnival at Bold Park Aquatic Centre and last Friday the Year 6 students participated in a range of activities at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp.
We had a bright start to this week as many students and staff dressed in orange to celebrate Harmony Day, with its messages about the value of diversity, and the importance of inclusion and a sense of belonging. In the words of the children in 3H, and Oscar V:
We should all come together and celebrate Harmony Day, because we respect each other and our cultural heritage. It is a way to show respect, kindness and peace
In Australia, we celebrate that we all belong no matter where we come from in the world.
This week the Year 5 students have been involved in in-term swimming lessons at Cottesloe Beach, and next week the Year 6 students will do the same. Year 5 and Year 6 in-term swimming lessons are always at the beach, but this year we have kept the students with their year level group only (unfortunately making bus trips more expensive for families) and the duration of in-term lessons was reduced from ten days to five (we were informed that swimming instructors were in short supply).
COVID-19 Close Contacts
I wanted to alert you to an amendment regarding the isolation protocols for HOUSEHOLD close contacts. As you are aware, when a member of a household tests positive, all other household members are deemed ‘close contacts’ and must quarantine for seven days. Prior to the amendment, this seven day period could potentially have been extended if another household member then tested positive. From now on however, if one or more household close contacts subsequently tests positive for COVID during the seven day quarantine period, this does not extend the time in quarantine for any remaining close contacts. That is, household close contacts who are asymptomatic and return a negative COVID result, can exit at the end of the seven day period that started with the initial household member who tested positive. I will update the most recent information I sent, to capture this amendment, and forward to you asap.
Also for your information, we are informed that the Omicron strain can present with less typical symptoms such as diarrhoea, particularly in children.
Kapinara Primary School Board
I will be emailing some information about our School Board and seeking nominations for an additional parent representative. Board membership may be for one, two or three years and those who have served on the Board may renominate. While our P & C invests enormous time and effort planning and executing a broad range of ‘hands-on’ activities, the School Board functions at a more strategic level, bringing valued parent perspectives to discussions primarily related to the development, monitoring and review of our three year Business Plans. The boards of public schools differ significantly from the types of boards with which you are probably familiar, and members do not need to have any specific experience or expertise. If this is something you may be interested in, please look out for tomorrow’s email.
Stay well.
Best wishes
Elizabeth
Harmony Day
Year 3H
I think Harmony day is nice because everyone is kind to each other. Poppy
It is peace in all the world and in our country, we all belong. George
It means peace, belonging, respecting other cultures. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs. Josi
Harmony Day means everyone belongs, sharing, communicating, and coming together celebrating different cultures. Vivienne and Rosie
It is about co-operation, peace and a day where we all belong. Lucy, Ashlee and Scarlett.
Year 4BJ
4BJ made two blankets for Harmony Day. The first is a possum skin blanket and shows images and information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders connection to Country. The second is a response to the book Two Blankets and shows the students individual stories, words and images that comfort them.

Year 4/5P

SCHOOL CHAPLAIN
Hi, I’m Mel; thank you for inviting me to be part of this special community at Kapinara!
I’ve been a primary school chaplain since 2010, first at Lake Gwelup, and now concurrently at Osborne Primary and Kapinara. I’m passionate about helping people relate well to each other, so it’s no surprise I was drawn to your school motto of “Kindness, Consideration, and Service for Others”.
I enjoy reading, doing jigsaws, eating dark peppermint chocolate, and pushing myself to try things that are a little bit scary (to me). My husband and I paddle our double surf ski from City Beach most weekends; we also enjoy hiking, canoeing, camping, bike-riding, social volleyball, liquorice liqueur, book club, hosting gatherings at home (usually involving fresh bread and cheese!), singing in a gospel choir, and regularly meeting with our church community in Subiaco.
Living close enough to be able to ride my bike to work is a new treat, and I particularly enjoy when it includes getting to say hi to families along the way.
It’s already apparent to me that the staff at Kapinara provide wonderful pastoral care to the school community; I feel privileged and thankful to be able to offer an extra layer of support. If you have a particular situation with which you’d like me to be involved, please make your request via the school leadership, or send me an email. melissa.caley@youthcare.org.au
ANZAC DAY
Anzac Day service will be run by the Year 3 students and the Year 6 student councillors as it has been in previous years. The difference will be that the service will either be streamed live to each class Or recorded and viewed by students in each class, with the recording also made available to families.
QKR Update
We are in the process of establishing an SMS service to convey any important messages. This can be especially useful during times like this, as email notifications are not always assured of being received when needed. In the interim, Qkr has the capacity to send notifications straight to the app, which we will now start to trial when we add payment items applicable to your chld/ren. It would be helpful if you could check your settings within the Qkr app and check if the ‘Push Notifications’ tab is enabled. If you find you would prefer not to receive notifications, then it can of course be disabled. All Qkr users of Year 4-6 students should have received a notification for a choir invitation this afternoon if their push notification setting is enabled.
