Principals Message
Dear Kapinara Families,
What a terrific start to the year we’ve had! It has been a pleasure getting to know our wonderful students, staff, and families, and I am already feeling incredibly welcomed by the Kapinara community.
Our new Deputy Principal, Sonya Orford, has also loved her start at Kapinara and is excited to be working with such a supportive and engaged school community.
One of the highlights so far has been seeing our students embody our school values- kindness, consideration, and service for others, both in the classroom and the playground. These values are at the heart of everything we do, and it’s wonderful to see them in action each day.
I’ve also been delighted with the entries for the inaugural Principal’s Art Award– the creativity on display has been fantastic! A common theme in the “We Are Kapinara” designs has been our beautiful beaches, highlighting the strong connection our students feel to our coastal surroundings.
I’d love the opportunity to meet more of you in person, so I warmly invite you to a “Meet the Principal” coffee morning next Wednesday after school drop-off. Light refreshments will be provided, and it will be a great chance to connect and chat informally. I look forward to seeing you there!

Power Outage Friday 21 February 2025
Please be advised that there will be a scheduled power outage in the area by Western Power, which will affect our school from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM tomorrow, 21 February 2025. During this time, email communication may be interrupted.
If you need to urgently contact the school, please call us in the front office 9237 7450.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Ongoing Building Works
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the ongoing building works around the administration and verandah area. Please note that the administration block is not to be used as a shortcut to the main school area.
Additionally, please be aware that this weekend and into next week, there will be further construction on-site. We kindly ask that everyone stay cautious around equipment and machinery. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Early Arrival Measures

School hours are 8:30am to 3pm. We understand that sometimes children may arrive at school earlier. The leadership team welcomes students who arrive early from 8.15am. The students gather in the undercover area until 8:30am. Board Games and physical construction resources are available for students to engage with their friends. Those who prefer to read or just chat with friends are also encouraged.
This change in routine has been adopted to promote the calm and orderly start to the school day. Parents are welcomed into classrooms and encouraged to meet with their child’s teacher informally from 8:30am.
Facilities are available onsite through the Outside of School Hours (OSH) Program. The program services the children in the school from 6:30am in the morning until 8:45am and operates from 3:00pm each day until 6:00pm. Families wishing to use this service can visit the TheirCare website or call TheirCare on 1300 072 410.
Mobile Phones and Smart Watches
To help maintain a focused and supportive learning environment, we kindly ask families to follow our school’s mobile phone and smart watch guidelines:
Student Mobile Phones
- If your child needs to bring a mobile phone to school, a signed permission form must be returned to their teacher.
- Phones should be switched off during school hours.
- To keep them safe, phones must be handed to the class teacher at the start of the day and returned at home time.
Student Smart Watches
- Smart watches should be set to aeroplane/school mode during school hours.
If you need to reach your child during the school day, please contact our school administration via email at kapinara.ps@education.wa.edu.au or call 9237 7450, and we’ll be happy to pass on any messages. Thank you for your support in helping us create a calm and focused school day for all students!
WhatsApp/Class Group Reminder
We’d like to take a moment to remind everyone about our policy regarding WhatsApp class and year group message groups. While we encourage and support parents in connecting and supporting one another in a positive way, please keep in mind that these groups are not official KPS communication channels.
To ensure these groups remain respectful and constructive, we ask that administrators make the groups PRIVATE and clearly outline usage guidelines. These should include:
- No negative comments about school staff or students.
- Any concerns should be raised directly with the teacher or school rather than posted for group discussion.
- Every effort should be made to include all families, taking into account separated families.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to maintaining a positive, supportive environment for all.
Chaplain’s Chat
It’s great to be working at Kapinara Primary this year. I have been in chaplaincy since 2008 across many schools. Speaking to my school line manager I appreciate the schools use of chaplaincy – a preventative approach to wellbeing, to support students to continue to thrive.
One way the chaplain supports students at Kapinara Primary has been facilitating social emotional (SEL) programs in classes or small groups – particularly the BUZ suite of programs, run by Chaplain Mel. This is one of my favourite programs that I have trained in, with its experiential learning through fun activities and many engaging stories.
Another way of supporting students is being available to check in with them and chat in small groups or 1-1. This occurs after being referred by staff or a parent. I offer a respectful, confidential, listening ear, and where appropriate am able to help students make sense of circumstances and encourage them in their direction. To clarify a common misconception; a Chaplain in government schools in Australia does not initiate any religious dialogue. The focus of the role is always on supporting holistic wellbeing.
If at any stage your child might benefit from support in friendships, dealing with emotions, or difficult life circumstances, please consider whether my role may assist them when speaking with their teacher. I am happy to get involved in whatever activities will support the school community. In the past I have run groups around sport, music, gardening and mindfulness to name a few.
In life outside of chaplaincy my wife and I are kept busy with our vivacious 5 and 7 year old daughters.
Wishing you and your families a happy and memorable year ahead.
Warm regards,
Paul

Head Lice
We’ve had some reported head lice cases at the school, and early detection is key to preventing further spread. Please check your child/ren for head lice and provide treatment if required. Treatment should occur for at least 10 days and until all eggs and hatchlings are gone.
Thank you for your cooperation.
