Principal’s Message 12.9.23

The mindset of successful people is stunningly important. It’s their ability to view failure not as something to avoid or feel ashamed of, but as something to welcome and leverage. If adopting a growth mindset is critical for success, then how you view failure is too. Nigel Collin

Food for thought!

Screen Time and the Brain
There is growing research both empirical and qualitative that digital devices can interfere with everything from sleep to creativity. Paediatrician Michael Rich, Associate Professor of Paediatrics at Harvard Medical School highlights the following;

  1. “It’s not how long we’re using screens that really matters; it’s how we’re using them and what’s happening in our brains in response”
  2. The growing human brain is constantly building neural connections while pruning away less-used ones, and digital media use plays an active role in that process
  3. Much of what happens on screen provides “impoverished” stimulation of the developing brain compared to reality
  4. Children need a diverse menu of online and offline experiences, including the chance to let their minds wander
  5. Boredom is the space in which creativity and imagination happen

Of critical importance is a good night’s sleep. It is the key to brain development, and Harvard Researchers have shown that using blue light-emitting screen devices like smartphones before bedtime can disrupt sleep patterns by suppressing secretion of the hormone melatonin.

Open Night
A reminder this Thursday is Kapinara ‘Open Night’. This is a positive night on our school calendar. As a community, we have a great deal to be very proud of. This is an opportunity to see firsthand the quality education all the students receive. It is also an opportunity for the staff to see firsthand the support of parents, and for the students to see how proud their parents are of their efforts. It allows parents to see the growth of their child.  I look forward to seeing our whole community next week 4pm – 6.00pm

Communication
To help with our communication strategy and ensuring a good response time to your emails, we have established a designated email address for emails specifically directed to the principal. The principal’s email address is often inundated with a great number of emails and we would not like any correspondence to get missed. If there are particular concerns that you would like addressed by the principal or the deputies, you may use Kapinara.ps.principal@education.wa.edu.au.
Our school email address of Kapinara.PS@education.wa.edu.au is still the best email to use for normal correspondence. Thank you for your support.

School Board Election
We will have one parent position available to join our School Board in 2024.

Coming up early next term there will be Board Elections. If you are interested in forwarding your name to be on the Board I encourage you to reach out to present members and discuss the role with them. The next Board meeting is on Monday 23 October. Interested parents can come along for the first 30 mins and sitting members will be available for open questions.

As parents/carers at Kapinara Primary School, you are encouraged and invited to nominate for a parent representative position that is currently available on our Board. If you are committed to the success of our school and would like to become further involved in its strategic direction, service on the Board may be for you.

A document will be sent out next week outlining the position, how to nominate and how the election will be conducted. Please keep an eye out for it.

Designing, Making and Entrepreneurship – Year 6 Fair
Our Year 6 students have been busy creating their own businesses. There has been a huge amount of planning and work done by Miss Lund and Mr Degebrodt to create a fabulous learning experience for the students. The level of planning and thought required by students is at a very high level. Thank you also to all the parents who have supported the students, enabling them to bring their ideas to life. It has been a day that the Year 6 students will never forget and one that has been enjoyed by all the students in the school.

Tabloids Day
On Monday we were treated to a sunny day to enjoy our Junior Tabloids event. The students all had a lot of fun and participated excitedly in all activities. Thank you to all the parent helpers who enabled the day to go smoothly. I appreciate all the parents and family members who came along to cheer and encourage the students in their events. The success of the morning comes down to the planning and hard work of Mrs Carruthers and Mrs Scott. Their hard work certainly paid off enabling everyone to have a very enjoyable day.

Leaving Students
We are seeking your support. We are currently planning for next year and it would be very helpful to know for our class structures if your child/ren is not returning to Kapinara in 2024. At this stage with the student numbers in each year level we will be having straight classes.

Kind Regards

Simon Reid
