Annual Report 2024
It is my pleasure to present the 2024 Kapinara Primary School Annual Report. The report’s purpose is to share highlights from the school year and show how our students are progressing against the targets in our 2024-2026 Business Plan. I trust you will find it informative and that it helps you better understand our school.
Our Business Plan focuses on the following key priorities:
- Promoting high quality teaching
- Enhancing a learning environment that champions wellbeing
- Inspiring shared leadership for impact
- Strengthening connections through relationships and partnerships
- Supporting strategic resourcing
These priorities align with our school’s values of kindness, consideration, and service for others and will guide our direction in the coming years. As we move forward into the next phase of Kapinara’s journey, I look forward to working together to build upon our strong foundation and continue striving for excellence in all aspects of school life.
The continued success of Kapinara Primary School is due to the combined efforts of the whole school community. This is a community-orientated school, with both staff and parents working in partnership to deliver the best educational opportunities for each child. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to lead this dynamic school and look forward to the next stage of our school improvement journey and continued success in 2025 and beyond.
I encourage all families to view the Annual Report, it offers just one of many windows into life at Kapinara. You can also stay connected and engaged by reading our school newsletter, visiting our school website, and attending the many events and activities held throughout the year. One such opportunity is our next Community Coffee and Catch-Up with the Principal, taking place on Thursday 12 June from 8.45am – 9.30am. It’s a lovely chance to connect, share ideas, and enjoy a relaxed conversation. We’d appreciate your RSVP via the link above to assist with catering.
Logo Submissions Due 6 June 2025
As part of our Positive Behaviour Support initiative, we’re inviting all students to help design a logo that represents Kapinara’s three core values: We are Kind, We are Considerate, Service for Others. This logo will become a key symbol in our new behaviour system, visually expressing the values that guide our school community. Students are encouraged to submit creative and original designs that reflect kindness, consideration, and leadership through service. Submissions can be simple symbols or a combination of images and should be handed into the office or class teacher by Friday, 6 June. A panel of teachers and Year 6 students will select the final design, which will be featured in our new badge system. Download the document here or you can collect a hard copy from the front office.

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime is a national event where over 2 million students listened to the story of the “Truck Cat” written by Deborah Frenkel and read by our very own Principal, Mrs Oddy. The students of Kapinara Primary School gathered in the undercover area on Wednesday 21st May to listen to Mrs Oddy’s very humorous rendition of this lovely Australian story about a big-hearted truckie who hit the open road with a brave little stray cat. Students from Kindergarten to Year Three enjoyed Mrs Oddy’s reading.
Exciting Mathematics News at Kapinara
We are thrilled to share that Kapinara Primary School is currently trialling a whole-school mathematics initiative aimed at strengthening student understanding and confidence in maths. This term, our Year 2BT and Year 3HS classes are taking part in an exciting action research project using PR1ME Mathematics, a highly regarded, research-based program developed in Singapore.
After careful consideration of a range of mathematics programs, our Mathematics Committee selected PR1ME for trial due to its strong track record in building deep mathematical understanding through best-practice teaching strategies. The program aligns with our goal of delivering a viable and guaranteed curriculum- one that ensures consistency, rigour, and accessibility for all learners.
PR1ME Mathematics follows a systematic approach that enhances student engagement and fluency. It is based on the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) model, guiding students from hands-on learning experiences to visual representations, and finally to abstract reasoning. This structured sequence supports students in developing a solid conceptual foundation before tackling more complex problems.
A typical one-hour PR1ME lesson includes:
- Engagement – Students begin with a hands-on task or real-world scenario to hook interest and activate prior knowledge.
- Teacher-led Instruction – Key concepts are explicitly taught and modelled by the teacher.
- Guided Practice – Students work collaboratively to apply their learning with teacher support.
- Independent Application – Students consolidate their understanding through independent tasks.
As part of the trial, participating teachers have undertaken professional learning, and students are using new PR1ME workbooks designed to support the program.
We value student voice as a key part of our decision-making. Students involved in the trial completed a survey in Week 2 and will complete a follow-up survey in Week 10. Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many students reporting increased enjoyment and confidence in maths. Teachers are also observing a noticeable improvement in students’ depth of understanding and engagement. Importantly, PR1ME offers rich extension opportunities, which we will continue to prioritise throughout the trial.
We look forward to sharing more insights. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our Mathematics Curriculum Leader, Gemma Hopetoun-Smith, at Gemma.Hopetoun-Smith@education.wa.edu.au.
2025 Kapinara Soirée
Save the date: Our annual soirée will be held on Tuesday 1st July, from 6:00–7:00pm at Churchlands Senior High School. Further details will be shared closer to the date.
Please note: An email was sent home today to all performing students. If your child is in Rockapella but has not registered, you will not have received this email. Please contact the school at kapinara.ps@education.wa.edu.au so we can add them to the group.
Yirra Yaakin Theatre Incursion

On Wednesday 21 May, students from Years 1 to 6 were treated to a powerful and engaging performance by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, held in our undercover area. The production, Kaarla Kaatijin (understand fire), captivated students with its beautiful puppetry, masks, music, and storytelling, drawing from Noongar Dreaming stories and language.
Presented in two sessions, the incursion offered all students the opportunity to connect deeply with Aboriginal culture and storytelling. The performance aligned with the West Australian Curriculum’s cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures and served as a meaningful lead-up to Reconciliation Week.
Kaarla Kaatijin explored the spiritual and practical importance of fire, encouraging students to reflect on environmental sustainability, cultural awareness, and caring for Country. The performance concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing students to further engage with the themes and artists.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company for bringing such a rich and valuable experience to Kapinara Primary School.

Year 2 Kings Park Excursion

On Friday 23 May, our Year 2 students from classes 2BT and 2D enjoyed an exciting excursion to Kings Park Education Centre and the Rio Tinto Naturescape. The day was filled with hands-on learning experiences that supported their Humanities and Social Sciences studies, focusing on important local places, people from the past, and the history of our community.
Students took part in the Koora Koora Kaarta Koomba program, where they explored how Perth (Boorloo) has changed over time and learned about the traditional roles of the Whadjuk Noongar people. The program offered a meaningful blend of history, culture, and sustainability, helping students develop a deeper understanding of our shared heritage.
In addition to the educational sessions, students enjoyed playtime in the Naturescape area and a self-guided walk through the botanic gardens and around the State War Memorial, making the most of the beautiful surroundings and further enriching their learning.
A big thank you to our Year 2 teaching team and the wonderful parent volunteers for their support and supervision throughout the day. Their care and enthusiasm ensured a fun and engaging experience for all students.
