Principal’s Message
Dear Families
I hope you are fit and well. As you are aware, the incidence of COVID has increased in the broader community. Given that we have several adults and children within our school community who are immunocompromised, I’m seeking your support with regard to testing and absences. If your child experiences symptoms consistent with COVID, please consider completing a test, and placing COVID in the comment when you advise us of an absence. This will help us monitor the context at Kapinara across the next few weeks. Thank you for your support.
Music Assembly
This morning we enjoyed an assembly that showcased our choir, string orchestra and instrumental music students. On behalf of all present, I’d like to thank and congratulate those who performed and acknowledge the effort and commitment they continue to invest. It’s wonderful to see students embracing the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through the IMSS program, and to see them flourish. I would also like to thank Ms Cirkovic (music specialist), Ms Arnold (orchestra conductor and violin/viola teacher) and Ms Ibrahimbegovic (guitar teacher) for being part of our assembly today; and also Mrs Person (double bass) and Ms Bak (cello) for helping their students prepare for today’s performance.

ICAS Science Medal
While we have yet to receive certificates for students who participated in ICAS Science, today we were delighted to present Year 2 student Rory T with a very special medallion. Very few students receive an ICAS medallion, as these recognise exceptional achievement in a particular area and within a particular year group. Huge congratulations to Rory!
School Board
Information about the School Board membership and a nomination form will be emailed to you this week. As previously advised, there is an opportunity for a member of our parent community to join the School Board in 2024. I would appreciate you considering if this is way in which you might be willing and able to contribute. Please return nominations forms to Elizabeth.Blackwell@education.wa.edu.au as soon as possible but no later than Friday 24 November 2023. There will also be a small number of printed forms available at the front office.
National School Opinion Survey 2023
I am aware that some of our families took the opportunity to complete a survey earlier this year. However, all public schools in WA are required to gather information via a different specific survey every second year, including this year. I will email a link to families tomorrow explaining why this particular survey matters.

Year 5&6 Debating
In Week 5, I had the pleasure of accompanying the Year 5 and 6 interschool debate students to the Town of Cambridge, Interschool Debate morning.
Each year, students in Year 5 and 6 express an interest in participating in our debate program, throughout Term 3 they work hard on refining debating skills and participate in our in-house debate event, from this we select our top 6 debaters to participate in the interschool debating event.
This year, Kapinara submitted two teams into the competition, our first team of Sana L, Alice B and Leila M, and our second team, Elliot M, Jayden H and Ellen M.
Congratulations to both teams for successfully winning their debates. Your arguments were well researched, structured and delivered.

Surf Safe Cyber Safety Incursion
Please refer to the email sent home today regarding an upcoming presentation by Paul Lithland. We are fortunate to have secured this valuable presentation from a much sought after speaker, for both senior school students and parents of our Kapinara community. There is no cost to students for the afternoon incursion, tickets for the parent evening presentation are $10 and available through Qkr.
National Recycling Week/Bin off Incursion
On Wednesday 15 November, during National Recycling Week, Year 4 will have the opportunity to take part in an incursion run by Jake Bamford, creator of the BinOff card game and Freelance Creative Media Producer, Creator and Consultant of Dapper Cranium Studios. (He may be familiar to some, as he also works with the Gould League at Herdsman Lake.) His workshop will look at his game BinOff and how he developed it, focusing on the recycling education it highlights and he will also do a board game development session with the students in order for them to create their own. No payment or permission required.
Year 4 Reconciliation Incursion
On 3 November, we had an Aboriginal Elder (Aunty Lois) and Marika Burke (non-Aboriginal facilitator) come into Kapinara Primary school from the Reconciliation Centre to talk to us about the similarities and differences between ‘Western law’ and ‘Aboriginal lore’. The incursion was linked to Civics and Citizenship and the importance and purpose of rules and laws in society.
The Year 4 students were extremely engaged throughout the incursion and displayed a good understanding of the Indigenous Culture and Traditions. They learned how rules were made in Indigenous communities and what the punishments were if the rules were broken.

St Vinnies Christmas Appeal
The St Vincent de Paul Society of Scarborough and City Beach deliver Christmas hampers to families in need. These are families in our local area and recently arrived refugees within the Perth metro. This year we require enough food for at least 50 hampers as a gift to approximately 150 people. Can we kindly ask for your support and generosity by donating some of the following:
· Christmas Cakes / Plum Puddings
· Mince Pies
· Long Life Custard
· Jelly
· Tinned Fruit
· Cordial / Juice
· Potato Chips / Crackers
· Sweets / Lollies / Biscuits
· Tinned Peas / Corn / Beetroot
· Tinned Ham / Tuna / Salmon
· Christmas decorations
Students from 4/5D will collect items each morning from the classrooms.
Thank you for your support.
