Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

End of Year Concert

Thank you for joining us for a special end of year celebration concert last Wednesday. Given the instability and conflict in many places across the world, I’m confident that I was not the only one grateful that we could gather together as a school community to enjoy the music, colour and fun. Thank you to our school P & C for organising and funding the stage, to Ms Cirkovic and Mrs Berry for preparing the music performances, to Mrs Hopetoun-Smith and Mrs Niebieszczanski for their organisation and support behind the scenes, and to Mr Dewar for setting up the sound system. I also wish to acknowledge the Year 6 music leaders, Ariana, Sophie and Poppy who compered the evening, and the Year 6 tech leaders, Connor and Joshua who managed the many changes in background music with maturity and composure under pressure.

Book Fair

Thanks again to the Kapinara community for supporting our annual Book Fair.  In addition to getting more books into the homes and hands of children, the Book Fair has again enabled us to add a range of new books and to replace favourites with newer versions. Special thanks to those who donated a book to the library – a name plate will be placed on the inside cover. Our dedicated library officers, Mrs Moore and Mrs Carrick would like to thank the family volunteers who assisted with the Book Fair – Rhonda Parker, Rose McDonnell, Lucas Patterson, Sarah Rose, Simone Beaton and Emma Schmidt (the P & C’s communications guru).

If you are looking for a gift for other family members you might like to visit the Children’s Book Council of Australia website  CBCA which showcases the winners of this year’s book awards.

Swimming Lessons

Children from Pre-Primary to Year 4 commenced in-term swimming lessons yesterday. As a parent I was always surprised by just how tired my busy children were during swimming lessons. Children’s increasing fatigue is generally matched by that of their parents, who are relieved when they no longer have to locate and rinse bathers and towels each night. Please remember to name everything that goes to and from swimming lessons – few will come forward to claim unnamed lost underwear … or goggles … or one shoe.

‘Service for Others’

We have been actioning the ‘service for others’ component of our school motto by donating food and assorted Christmas items to the St Vincent de Paul Society (St Vinnies). Thank you to Kapinara families who have donated items that will provide hampers for those in need in the local area. The food will be packed on December 17 and delivered to families in the Scarborough area on December 18.

Thank you too to families who have responded to the request to consider donating any remaining stationery items to Give Write this year. Give Write repackages stationery for ensure students can start their new school year with the stationery items they need but may not be able to afford. If you haven’t already done so, please click on the following link to donate any stationery items your child hasn’t used this year.

Friday Assembly

We will hold a brief special assembly this Friday morning, to formally wish our Year 6 students well as they prepare to graduate, and to congratulate current Year 5 students who will become the Student Captains, Councillors and Faction Captains for 2024. Students who have received credits or distinctions in the recent ICAS Science Assessments will be presented with their certificates.

Public School Review

Next Monday Mr Craig Skinner and Mr Darren Greaves, Directors – Public School Review within the Department of Education WA will visit Kapinara to meet with staff, students and community members. Prior to this we submit relevant documents electronically, which will serve as conversation starters in small group meetings. The Review is an opportunity for someone external to validate a school’s self-assessment practices, processes and evidence-informed planning.

Year 6 Graduation

Next Tuesday is a particularly important event for our Year 6 students. Their Graduation ceremony reflects this significant milestone in the lives of our current school leaders.

Classes in 2024

I am pleased to advise that given the stability of our enrolment numbers for 2024, we expect to have two single-year-level classes (straight classes) at each year level K-6.

Class Lists

Teachers have drafted class lists. Thank you to parents who have provided me with additional information where you believed there was a need. The class lists are currently being checked against this information. If additional information, including that provided by parents, does not align the lists will be returned to your child’s class teacher requesting adjustments. They will then be returned to the office for final checks.

Best wishes
Elizabeth Blackwell

Class Reading Books

Could families please return any class reading books that they may have at home to their class teachers as soon as possible. Thank you.

Uniform Shop & Canteen

A reminder that the canteen will be closed next week for cleaning and the uniform shop will be closed for stock taking.
