Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Carer

Under the Sea’

Congratulations to the amazing team who organised and coordinated last Friday night’s ‘Under the Sea’ disco. Someone commented that the undercover area looked fancier than the set-up for their Year 12 school ball. Each year the disco is run by a dedicated team of Year 6 parents, with proceeds helping to subsidise the Year 6 students’ camp later in the year.

Kiss and Drive

You may have noticed that the road markings for ‘Kiss and Drive’ and ‘No Standing’ areas on Catesby St have had a facelift. Once the request had been made to the Town of Cambridge, they acted quite quickly to assess the markings that were there and arrange for them to be repainted. Thank you to the team at the Town of Cambridge ?

Attendance

Western Australian public schools are required to maintain accurate attendance records for every enrolled student. All absences are recorded according to mandated lesson attendance codes which are consistent across all public schools. The purpose of these codes is to enable individual schools and the school system as a whole, to analyse attendance data to determine common reasons for student absences and to inform strategies for improvement.

Kindy: Although enrolment in Kindergarten is not compulsory, once enrolled a child’s attendance is compulsory.

Attendance Codes

Thank you for ensuring any absences from school are followed up with confirmation and a reason/explanation. This enables us to assign accurate lesson attendance codes to your child’s absence. From time to time, you may receive a follow-up document or phone call to ensure an appropriate code is recorded. If we are unable to assign a lesson code to an absence, it defaults to being recorded as an unexplained/unauthorised absence.

Authorised vs Unauthorised ‘Holidays’

Teaching, learning, and assessment are all part of a continuous cycle. Concepts and skills are introduced, practiced with support, practised independently to develop fluency, and then applied in new contexts. Absences disrupt this cycle and often create gaps in learning, which is why regular attendance is so important and ‘holidays’ during term time are discouraged. However, it is acknowledged that in exceptional circumstances families find it necessary to travel in school time (for example to visit unwell/elderly relatives living interstate or overseas). In such circumstances, principals have the discretion to record this as an authorised as opposed to an unauthorised vacation, and an alternative attendance code is applied. If travel during the term is unavoidable and  you would like this to be considered as an authorised vacation, please contact me prIor to travelling at  Elizabeth.Blackwell@education.wa.edu.au

Thank you for working with us to maximise your child’s success, happiness and wellbeing at school.

Dogs at School

A reminder that dogs are not to brought onto the school grounds. For safety reasons, please would parents refrain from bringing dogs of all sizes and ages onto school grounds when students are around. This includes assemblies, pick up and drop off times. We ask for the community’s cooperation on this matter.
