NAPLAN
Later this term, students in Year 3 and 5 will sit NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy). There are four tests which assess skills the students learning at school in the areas of writing (persuasive or narrative), reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar, and punctuation) and numeracy. This can be worrisome for some students. You can support your child by reassuring them and reiterating our messaging, “do the best you can”, and “we are proud of your positive attitude towards your learning.”
Some familiarisation and explanation of NAPLAN is useful to help students understand and be comfortable with the format of the tests and type of questions. NAPLAN practice will take place over the coming weeks in the classroom.
Parents can expect to receive a NAPLAN report showing how their child is progressing. It is important to remember NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. If your child is away on a particular day, catch up testing will be conducted when they return, within the NAPLAN testing window.

School Clean Up Day

Can you imagine the good we could do, if we all came together on one day and took action to improve the environment? What a difference we could make! Let’s see how many Kapinara Primary School families we can bring together and make a real impact…
A School Clean Up is a great way to inspire students to learn about the impact of rubbish on their local environment while playing an active role in their community.
On Friday, the Year 6 Sustainability Team, in collaboration with the P&C, will be hosting two Clean Up events, one at lunchtime on the school grounds and the other after school at Beecroft Park.
Where: Beecroft Park, City Beach
When: Friday 1 March 2024
Students and their parents/guardians can either meet in the under-cover area at 3:05pm and walk together OR at the Beecroft gazebo near the playground/toilet block at 3:15pm
Duration: 3.20 – 4.20pm
Event Timeline
| 3.20 pm | Welcome, safety briefing and creation of Clean Up Teams |
| 3:30pm | Beecroft Park Clean Up |
| 4:15pm | Reconvene at Beecroft gazebo near playground |
| 4:20pm | Clean Up Team photo |
Since this is an out-of-school hours community event, parents/carers will need to be present to ensure the safety and adequate supervision of their child/ren.
You can Clean Up Australia any day of the year – we know our waste challenges go far beyond one day!
Chaplain Chat
Mrs Melissa Caley is our school chaplain; everyone calls her Mel :)

The purpose of chaplaincy in WA public schools is to provide pastoral care to students, staff, and families.
One way Mel supports our school community is through 1:1 time. When parents or staff refer students to Mel, each case is assessed by the student services team before proceeding, including obtaining parent consent if referred by staff. Year 4-6 students can also self-refer, using a “Chaplain Chat” form, available from classroom teachers.
Notes:
* A key feature of chaplaincy is the expectation of confidentiality, unless something unsafe has been disclosed.
* While chaplaincy provides pastoral care and support, it is not a counselling service.
Mel is also a trained facilitator of the Build Up Zone (BUZ) social & emotional learning programs, which were introduced to Year 2, 3, 4, and 5 classes in 2023, and which will continue in PP and Year 6 classes this year. www.buildupzone.com
With the assistance of the Year 6 Lunch Club leaders, Mel will continue to run a drop-in group in the library on Mondays, rotating between Years 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6.
If you would like to access the Chaplaincy service (or just drop in for a cuppa and chat), then please call or email the school, leave a message, and Mel will get back to you on one of her work days (Mon/Tues).
Community and Wellbeing Team
Last Friday, 23rd of February we had a fabulous school sundowner. We had ice-cream, face painting, a pizza van, taco van, and jelly cups. We also had a DJ, so all of us, kids and some brave adults, could have a groove. We would like to thank the P&C as well as all the volunteers who made the sundowner astonishing. Mollie and Amelia
