Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you for your support in ensuring a smooth, positive start to the school year. It is only Week 3, but:
- the Year 5s and Year 6s have completed their in-term swimming lessons at Cottesloe Beach, and
- several classes have already held class meetings for parents.
Internet and Technology Agreements
- Thank you for the timely return of the three separate permissions required in order for children to access the internet. One enables us to create an online account for each student, even though younger students are unlikely to log in with an individual user name and password, with the exception of Mathletics. The hard copy package is to ensure students and parents have a clear understanding of what the responsible use of digital technologies and the internet look like at Kapinara. Finally, the Third Party Permissions completed online, let parents know what and where students’ personal information is stored. In almost all cases this personal information only includes your child’s name and class. The key points in relation to Third Party Permissions are:
- We will always use the least amount of personal information possible (eg child’s first name, initial of last name, and the child’s class)
- The online platforms and apps provided by Third Parties have all been determined to pose a low risk with regard to personal information
- Third Party information is about what personal information may be collected and where that is stored. It has nothing to do with the content or quality of the platforms or apps themselves. This is determined by the teachers and leadership team at each school.
- There are a few programs that some students may not access during the year. They have been included in case we decide to trial them, or because one or two year levels plan to access them, and we might want other years to subsequently access them also.
Internet Safety
February 6 was Safer Internet day, and each class has been involved in cyber safety activities. Some activities such as webinars and activities developed by the eSafety Commission are continuing this week. The eSafety Commission’s website continues to be updated and contains helpful information and advice for families, schools and students.

Public School Review
In December 2023, we completed our most recent public school review. The report was viewed by staff on our first school Development Day and will be considered by the School Board at our first meeting. In the meantime, you can find a copy on the Department of Education’s Schools Online, and on our school website. Recommendations from our PSR report will be checked against our Business Plan to ensure all of these have been embedded in our planning.
I’m also pleased to announce that Rob Pradera (parent of Arlo ad Orson) will join the School Board this year, replacing Steve Hendry whose daughter Charlotte graduated last year. He joins parent members Felicity Maher, Bronwyn Grieve, Gavin Bennett and Suzie Richards, and staff members David Watson, Lauren Tsironis, Kylie Lund, Aleisha Niebieszczanski and me.
P & C
Please consider coming along to tonight’s first P & C meeting for 2024, and to the annual Sundowner organised by the P & C, scheduled for Friday 23 February. Our P & C works incredibly hard, welcoming people into the Kapinara school community, running the canteen and uniform shop, and raising funds that enrich the learning and learning environment for our students. They are always grateful for any support, and welcome newcomers – even if you are only available on an odd occasion!
Environment
One of the six threads running through our business plan is environmental sustainability. There is an opportunity for students to contribute to a survey.
Best wishes
Elizabeth Blackwell
Kapinara P&C – Join us!
Our P&C is made up completely of volunteers and this year we need YOU! Our AGM is on Tuesday, 13th February 7pm in the Library. All office bearer roles are open and we encourage anyone to nominate themselves! There’s ongoing support throughout the year so it’s not as daunting as it may seem! It really is a lot of fun – See you there! More information; https://www.facebook.com/share/p/V5j2tMcU3zQaaeAR/?mibextid=I6gGtw
Lost Property Location
The Lost Property boxes have been relocated to the top corridor, outside Room 2. Please check regularly for missing items. Named items are returned to students when possible.
Thank you P&C!
A big thank you to our wonderful Kapinara P&C and to the families that make a big difference to our school through their voluntary contributions! Thanks to this support, the school now has a defibrillator permanently installed on the external wall of the Principal’s office. It has been registered with St John’s to ensure 000 is called and will appear on the First Responder App when searched.
It is mandatory that all WA schools have a defibrillator installed by June 2024. We’re good!
Housekeeping reminders!
~ If you are sending medication in for your child to be administered on a regular basis (or only if required), it is a requirement that we receive the medication in its original packaging.
~ We are missing quite a few ‘home readers’ from last year. We understand they can easily hide in bookshelves. If you could you please drop them into the office if you find any, we would be very appreciative.
~ We are noticing an increase in families using the school driveway as they are entering or exiting the school. For safety reasons, we ask that you please use the path beside the driveway at all times.
Thank you!
