Arbor Day Celebrations
We were fortunate to be one of the schools invited to the Town of Cambridge’s Arbor Day celebrations at Lake Monger on Friday, 25 June. The Year 4s and the three Year 6 Sustainability Leaders took part in the day. The morning began with Noongar Elder, Neville Collard doing a Welcome to Country, and explaining that Lake Monger and its surrounding area is very important to the Aboriginal people.
Some of you may recall that it was Neville Collard who did the Welcome to Country at Kapinara’s 50th Year celebrations. He told us of the importance of trees as sources of food, medicine, weapons, shelter and tools. We also learned that the shadows of the sun were a way of telling the time, that each group of Aboriginal people had a totem that was important to them, and they believed that the land owns us and we should only take what we need. We then went on to plant Coastal Rosemary and Grevillia and helped the Mayor, Keri Shannon, plant a large River Gum Tree.
The Rotary Club cooked us an amazing BBQ to finish off the morning. We would like to thank Sue Waite, Natural Environment Officer for the Town of Cambridge, for organising such a successful day. We look forward to visiting Lake Monger and seeing our bushes and tree grow.

Free Dress Day
To help raise money for Telethon, the Year 6 Councillors have organised a Free Dress Day on Thursday 1 July. The theme is ‘what you want to be when you are older’. We would like all students who dress up to bring a gold coin donation for Telethon. You can read their full message here
Canteen
Canteen will be opening Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in Term 3! Please note the canteen will be closed on Tuesdays.
The P&C has decided to trial a 3 day canteen week in response to the growing demand for the canteen service and the rising numbers of orders. It is also due to consideration being given to the feedback of parents in the recent school survey, where a large number of parents indicated they worked on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
We hope the expansion of the canteen service assists Kapinara families and makes the routine before school a little easier! We will review how successful the 3 day week goes towards the end of Term 3 to consider if we continue, or return to a 2 day a week service. We appreciate the support of the school community to operate and can’t do it without you!
