Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers

I trust most of you had some special family time over the two-week break. Thankfully, most of our students returned injury-free …. unlike one or two parents.

Our Staff

At the very end of last term, we were advised that Mrs Knowles would continue in the fixed-term Principal position that she has been in since February. Mrs Dixon will continue in the Deputy Principal role. I am delighted to confirm that Mr Watson will continue in Year 6 and Miss Trandos in Year 5 (Thursdays and Fridays).

Also at the end of last term, Mr Watt advised us of his intention to retire. As many of you know, Mr Watt is a very quiet, private person and unfortunately, I haven’t been able to convince him to have even a small send-off. If you would like to send him a card/email etc please feel free to do this through me, as Mr Watt will no longer have access to his Department of Education email. I wish to publicly acknowledge and sincerely thank him for his many years of service to the Department, and particularly to the students at Kapinara Primary School. I am certain you join with me in wishing him good health and every happiness in his retirement.

While on the topic of staffing, I’d like to take the opportunity to explain a little about how the provision of long service leave works within our Department. As part of the strategy for managing leave liability within the public sector, employees are expected to take long service leave within a two-year period. Prior to the last eighteen months, the majority of employees would take several weeks leave before or after the vacation periods and would travel overseas. Given that this has not been an option in 2020 and 2021, several people have temporarily reduced their working week to four days or taken leave in smaller amounts than they might otherwise have done. Staff always endeavour to take leave (or have medical procedures) in a way that minimises the impact on children and learning and will continue to do so.

As of today, I am hopeful that we might be able to move forward with at least some of the whole school events we have planned. We have a number of assemblies scheduled this term and hope to be able to bring all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 together for them as often as possible. Our plan is to continue to invite the parents of children hosting the assembly and those receiving certificates. If we need to make changes at the last minute, I apologise in advance. This week 6W will be hosting our postponed NAIDOC week assembly, which we are looking forward to.

Best wishes
Elizabeth Blackwell

Canteen

Canteen would like to remind families that they will now be open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays instead of Tuesdays and Thursdays, effective immediately, starting this week. As you may have heard, we made this change in response to feedback from the parent survey conducted by the school in term 2, which indicated that parents would be more likely to volunteer in the canteen if it was open on different days.

Athletics Club

Athletics Club will commence on Monday 26th July and will take place every Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon, concluding after the Interschool Carnival in Week 9. The club will take place between 7.40am and 8.40am on Monday mornings and between 3.10pm and 4.10pm on Wednesday afternoons. We would like to invite students from Years 3-6 who are keen to practise their running, jumping, throwing and catching to come along. Students do not have to register to take part. Those wishing to take part should simply meet Ms Burrows on the oval. If any parents would like to assist with coaching, please contact Liz directly via the link below. Any questions please contact Mrs Burrows elizabeth.burrows@education.wa.edu.au
