Plastic Free Term 3 Competition – Kapinara Wins!!!
Our Year 5s entered the Term 3 competition for Waste Wise’s Plastic Free Term 3 Competition with the following submission with supporting documents of posters and transcripts from our sustainable assembly. We were recently announced as the winning school!
During Term 3 the Year 5’s at Kapinara School took part in a number of initiatives to reduce plastic waste. We linked it in with Science Week which looked at Deep Blue, innovations for the future of our oceans. Our class researched the problem of marine debris and designed, constructed and programmed models using the Lego WeDo kits.
We took part in a Plastic Aware August challenge where we kept a diary of anything we had noticed and actions we had taken – this ranged from picking up litter to using reusable bottles to changing shopping habits of the family. All of the work linked in very well with the Year 5 Geography curriculum which looks at the effect of people’s actions on the environment.
The term ended with a Sustainable September assembly where we presented all the information we had found out, sung the Earth Day song Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and explained the initiatives for next term which included a Wrapper Free Wednesday and taking part in the Container for Change programme. In the last week of term we also make our own Sustainable Showbags on a biome of the world and the students were only given a paper bag and recycled paper. They swapped them on the last day of school like a secret santa.
The students were very motivated and I think will make a difference to their family and school community.
