The Y Out of School Hours Care

We would like to sincerely thank our outgoing supervisor Beth for the thoughtful care she has shown our students and the positive relationships she has established and maintained with families and our school. The demands of Beth’s tertiary studies have meant that she can no longer commit to the hours required to coordinate our OSHC service. We will miss her, but wish her every success with the remainder of her Social Work studies.

We extend a warm welcome to The Y’s new supervisor Katie. Please see the community news below for more information.

The School Banking

Here at Kapinara we participate in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking Program.  The program offers students a fun and interactive way to save money.   School banking day is Wednesday morning from 8.30am downstairs where the uniform shop is.   To get involved in the program your child needs to have a CBA Youth saver account.  This can be done online by visiting www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the ‘Open Now’ link to open the Youthsaver account.  Once you have received your welcome pack (takes about 5 days) you can start depositing straight away.  (Please note: When you wish to make your first withdrawal from any CBA branch, you will need to provide your child’s birth certificate and drivers licence for identification)

If your child has an existing Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away.  Just bring their account details on School banking day.

For every 10 deposits made, students can redeem a reward item.  Current rewards available include handballs, textas, key rings, scratch cards, soccer ball and many more. By making regular weekly deposits, not only does your child benefit but the school also receives a commission.

For students already participating in the program, please remember to come every Wednesday to save your pennies!
Please email the school banking coordinator at schoolbankapinara@gmail.com or visit the school website for more information

2021 Choir “Auditions”

I hope you are having a wonderful start to the year. This year we will be starting Choir in Week 6 Term 1. Choir consists of interested students in Years 4 – 6.

I will hold ‘auditions’ in class in the next couple of weeks to get a general idea of children’s vocal ranges and tones, and to identify our strengths as a choir. This will help me to select repertoire for the year. It is not a ‘formal audition’ – all children who audition will get in.

Weekly Choir rehearsals will be held on Thursdays, starting at 8.00am sharp and finishing at 8.30am in the Music Room.  Choir will commence Thursday, 11th March.

Choir students have a few concerts in which they are required to perform. These include:

  • Soirée – 12th August
  • Wembley Downs Fair – 30th October
  • Potentially, several special assemblies such as Naidoc Week

Singing with their peers can offer children a myriad of benefits. These include lifting mood, a sense of teamwork, increasing neuro-connections that support academic achievement, developing a musical ear and having fun!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

Day 1 of Term 1 – Principal’s Message

Dear Families

It was wonderful to welcome all but one of our Kindergarten groups to school today. The children seemed well rested and happy to be back, so it was a great start to the term and the school year.

Thank you for your cooperation and support with this morning’s drop-off arrangements, and this afternoon’s pick-up. We will continue with these arrangements for the next four days. The next couple of days will enable us to evaluate how things are working, and what will be put in place to enable you to meet your children’s teachers with more than a greeting of ‘hello’.

  • Kindergarten children will follow the plan emailed by Mrs Mee and Mrs Norton-Smith yesterday.
  • Pre-Primary students will continue to arrive and depart in two scheduled groups for the remainder of this week.
  • Students in Years 1-6 are asked to arrive in two groups for one more day only however, as we don’t anticipate as many adults on site in the morning from Wednesday onwards.
  • Children in Years 1 and 2 will be released in two groups for the remainder of this week. Children in Mrs Chipps’, Mrs Tombides’ and Mrs Tusak’s classes will be out the front to meet parents at 2:50pm.
  • Children in Miss Stewart’s and Mrs Jackson’s/Mrs Jonklaas’s class will be out the front just before 3:00pm.

Could parents please wait at or near the top of the grassed area between the office and Catesby St, rather than at the bottom of the path to enable children (particularly the Year 1 and 2 children) to flow through from the quadrangle to the path in front of the office. Teachers are trying to get to know which child belongs to which parent; we want to avoid anyone walking up the staff driveway, particularly with children; AND we want the students in Years 3 -6 to be able to move comfortably up the path when they are dismissed.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this regard.

Thank you too, to those who are able to arrive and depart via the school oval, as this really helps everyone to spread out. J

I hope all our Kapinara students had a happy and productive day, and that our new students felt comfortable and welcome.

PS The Year 6 students looked FABULOUS in their (room for growth) Leavers’ jackets today!

Best wishes

Elizabeth

P&C News Week 2

Hello Kapinara Families, old and new, and welcome back (finally!) to the new school year.

On behalf of the P&C we’d like to extend a very warm welcome to all of our new families, from those in Kindy all the way through to year 6. We’re looking forward to getting to know as many of you as possible, and hope to meet you in person very soon.

To our returning families, we welcome you back just as warmly. Hopefully the extended school holiday break wasn’t too onerous – relaxing even? And we hope you’ll have the opportunity to admire the now completed Wobbly Playground at the bottom of the Kindy stairs, which was finished over the school holidays thanks to the amazing support you provided throughout 2020.

(For those families who are no longer at Kapinara – thank you for your patience as we finalise the P&C’s 2021 email database. Feel free to send us an email reminder to remove you from this list.)

Kapinara Welcome Sundowner 2021 Event – Friday 5 March

Save the date for the annual Kapinara welcome Sundowner event on FRIDAY 5 MARCH from 5-9pm (pending lockdown advice and Covid-safety requirements). This is a great opportunity for new families to get to know the Kapinara community – BYO, picnic on the oval, and enjoy a great evening out for all ages!  The band has been booked and food options are being finalised – stay tuned for booking information coming soon.

P&C Meetings – Date for Your Diary

The first regular meeting of the P&C for 2021 will take place on TUESDAY 23 FEBRUARY at 7pm, in the staffroom. Any and all members of the Kapinara community are welcome to attend and your support is greatly appreciated – you don’t need to be a member to attend, only to vote, and membership costs just $1 . Participation in the P&C is a great way to learn more about how the school is run, how you can help the P&C support the needs of our kids through fundraising and community-building, to meet other parents and teachers from outside your class group, and more.

The P&C’s Annual General Meeting will take place later in term 1 – stay tuned for more details.

Uniform Shop – Online Ordering This Week

Due to post-lockdown restrictions, the uniform shop will run an online ordering system for this week. We hope to resume normal in-person service from next week onwards as and when restrictions are lifted. In the meantime, you can download an order form from https://bit.ly/3cRaq1T and email your order to kapinara.uniform@gmail.com Orders will be packed by our volunteers and sent home with students via classroom teachers. You can send queries to the same email address if you have any queries, and our uniform shop managers will be happy to help however they can.

Canteen – WE NEED YOU!

The canteen will open from week 3 onwards (commencing Tuesday 16 and Thursday 18 February) providing recess and lunch options every Tuesday and Thursday unless otherwise advised. As you may know, our canteen relies on volunteers to provide a cost-effective and healthy service, and without volunteers we’re unable to operate at full capacity. With fewer volunteers, we may need to either reduce menu options, or potentially close on selected days. Mums, dads, aunts/uncles, grandparents or neighbours – anyone over 18. All are welcome and tasks are simple – cutting fruit, prepping toasted sandwiches/wraps/pizza/salads, packing completed orders – your support makes a huge difference!

Canteen volunteers can work either half shifts from 8.45am-10.45am or 10.45-1pm, or a full shift 8.45-1pm. Parents volunteering for a half shift receive a free recess for their child/ren, and those volunteering for a full shift receive a free lunch for their child/ren. Hand washing and following strict hygiene measures are of critical importance for all those who are volunteering.

We have found the most efficient way to manage volunteer requirements is to assign every class in the school the duty of providing the volunteers for each week. Each class will be assigned responsibility for 2x weeks per year, once in terms 1-2, and once more in terms 3-4. We manage our volunteer roster via Signup.com, and the roster for terms 1 and 2 2021 is available now at https://signup.com/go/itHUFmZ Reminders will be issued a week in advance and the night before, and class reps will also ask for support. Ms DeBrass’s class 3/4D is responsible for volunteers to kick off term 1 (week 3 = next week) – huge thanks in advance!

**If you are ill, please do NOT attend your shift. Let the canteen know via email to kapinarafamilies@gmail.com or call the main school number – as much notice as possible is preferred and if you can provide a replacement even better, but providing a safe and hygienic canteen service is our utmost priority. The canteen will adapt to manage this, and can do a reduced menu that day if needed.**

Any suggestions for food items you’d like to see added to the menu are always welcome – please respond to this email at any time. We strive to provide healthy food options in line with official guidelines, with the occasional treat item for good measure (we all need a little sweetness in our lives!)

School Banking

We’re working with the School to determine when the School Banking program will resume in 2021, hopefully in the next week or so. Stay tuned for further details, or check out information on the website at http://kapinaraps.wa.edu.au/parent-information/banking/

Parent Reps

Parent representatives are a critical part of helping the P&C communicate across the parent body, which in turn helps the school run smoothly. We’ll be sending a separate email with details about how you might be able to help.

Thank you –

COVID update 5th February

Dear Families

This is a quick email to confirm that:

  • school will be up and running on Monday ?
  • all staff will be wearing masks
  • all adults who come to school must be wearing masks (as they need to be anyway)
  • teachers will be able to remove masks when they are ‘teaching’, giving instructions etc as the priority will be on getting messages across with clarity, but must wear masks at all other times
  • when I email details about Monday morning, I will suggest how we might help children who may experience anxiety with us all wearing masks!
  • swimming lessons for students in Years 5 and 6 will go ahead, commencing Wed
  • Out of School Hours Care will be available before and after school
  • for the purposes of referring to term planners etc, we will call next week ‘Week 2’

I will send a further email to clarify details about pick-up and drop-off on Monday. We just need to make a few adjustments to the original plan.

We will also clarify arrangements for PP and Kindy students, including ‘finish times’ for Kindergarten children next week and the week after. I can confirm that it will be the Tues/Thurs Kindy group that attends next Friday.

Off to collect boxes of face-masks!

Take care everyone.

Elizabeth 🙂

COVID update 4th February

Dear Families

I sincerely hope that you and your extended families are not only healthy, but also safe, and have been spared the direct impacts of this week’s bushfires. On behalf of the school community, thank you to those of you who have been on the frontline, managing and supporting those affected by COVID measures and/or the fires.

I have been waiting for further advice from the Premier and our Director General, but thought that I would confirm where things stand at the moment.

Unless or until we hear otherwise, I am anticipating that we will all return to school for the start of Term 1 on Monday, 8 February. I imagine that the beginning and end of the day will be as originally proposed. We already have additional cleaning in place for Term 1, hand sanitiser for classrooms, and have planned for handwashing throughout the day.

Swimming lessons at the beach that were due to start on Monday 8 February for students in Years 5 and 6, will now commence on Wednesday, and will be an eight day program. Kim Knowles has been amending permission slips, costs etc and information will be emailed to families on Monday morning, if not before. Of course, swimming lessons proceeding will be subject to any conditions which may be attached to school returning.

I will be in touch once again when I have further information pertaining to next week. In the meantime, stay locked away and safe for another 24 hours!

Take care everyone.

Elizabeth
